welbutrin side effect

Posted by vicky on April 12, 2002, at 23:23:18

I am on several medications, most recently the pdoc
added Welbutrin 100mg bid to the mix.(perphenazine,
buspar, prozac and welbutrin) Possible side effect
of Welbutrin, Difficulty Urinating? it seems that
when I have to "go"
i now have to wait sometimes for 5 minutes to relieve
myself. Very unusual, and never had this problem
before. Is this common with welbutrin.? I went to a medical
dr. and all he said was that because I'm on all
these medications, they sometimes "Block"
the nerve. I don't know, anyone else had
any experience like this? Kidneys are something
you don't want to mess around with!!

Hi Vicky,

Yes, I had the same problem when I was on Wellbutrin, even though many doctors and drug company literature will tell you that it is unlikely or less likely to happen with Wellbutrin than with the other, older antidepressants. The old tricyclic antidepressants (elavil, imipramine, desipramine, etc.) were notorious for causing urinary retention due to their anticholinergic activity. Wellbutrin was "not supposed to" have this effect, but I definitely had urinary retention on it. There is a drug called bethanechol (urecholine?) that can be taken to help you urinate. I took it for a while and it did help.

I hope you feel better!

Bekka
