ISO and FACHAD: I've just gotta know this!

Posted by Janelle on March 23, 2002, at 20:43:22

Iso and Fachad,

Both of you have been extremely HELPFUL to me in posting info from websites or links to websites that more deeply answer the questions I've raised.

Now, I've just gotta know - HOW do each of you find this incredibly valuable information? Do each of you spend A LOT of time on the Internet doing searches on pyschiatric topics? Where do you find the time to do it?!

Iso - are you employed outside of your home?

Thanks!
-Janelle

Hi Janelle, I'm employed part-time & don't have as heavy of responsibilities like I used to. I've being studying the brain & its chemistry for almost 17 years & more is being added all the time. I have some background in biology & chemisty, so it helps there. And lastly, I'm an information freak - if something interests me, I've got to learn as much as I can. It's my hobby or recreation, so to speak.

Besides the weather the last couple of weeks has just sucked for such a normally warm place. We had cold & blowing snow - never heard of before at this time of year, so spent time at home near the computer. But today got up to 15 degrees Celcius, so I was outside for a while today! Should be warm now on.

ISO, thanks, more:

Hi Iso,

Thanks for explaining how you know so much - that is VERY impressive that you have been studying the brain & its chemistry for almost 17 years & more is being added all the time. I gather that this is SELF study - you do research in books, articles and the Internet by yourself not taking classes/school?

I'm impressed by both the wealth of knowledge you have and that you are able to UNDERSTAND the very complex, technical material like that in the links you've given me. I find it almost impossible to fully understand.

You said that "the weather the last couple of weeks has just sucked for such a normally warm place" so I'm curious where you live - if I recall correctly from some other thread, you are NOT in the US? Are you in Canada? If so, what part of Canada is warm??!! If you're not in Canada, where R U? (I'm in the southwestern US where it IS warm ALL THE TIME!)

I live in what I love telling people is the 'banana belt' of Canada, very close to Vancouver, BC. The climatic zone here is 8b (if you're a gardener, you'll understand that). People really can grow bananas here, but they're just the decorative variety, they don't have a long enough warm period to bear fruit. Personally, I don't think the plants look that decorative myself.

After the snow melted (in a couple of days) the flowers were still okay after all. I can't wait to get outside in my garden - the best therapy there is for me.

Yeah, I'm mostly self-taught - gardening too & I pursue the science behind it too (botany). I'm just good at comprehending stuff & do enjoy teaching others. I hope to start my own small gardening business & teaching others too, as many customers have asked me where I work if I would. I just don't have a good business/organisation head on me.

Janelle,

I'm pleased that I've been able to explain some things to you, and in such a way that they are understandable.

As to how I came to know about this stuff, I just have a very high academic aptitude.

There is a saying, "Question: Why do mountain climbers climb mountains? Answer: Because they are there." That's pretty much how it is with me and subjects that interest me. I just "dive in" and master the subject matter.

I can't play a musical instrument, I'm not a sports fan, but I can learn anything I want to learn.

Also, I've been researching this psyc med stuff for over 10 years, and you can learn a lot in that amount of time, even with a full time job and not looking at it or reading anything for months. Then a few months later, I'd pick up a few articles or a book...and so on.
