Weight Loss

Posted by Danni on February 28, 2002, at 18:59:13

I have been on Topamax for approx. 5 weeks. I started at 25 mg. twice a day, and I noticed no terrible side effects. The meds worked for my moods though. I had suffered terrible mood swings and the med seemed to even them out. At the end of the 3rd week it seemed to stop working for me so them increased the dose to 50mg in the am and 25 in the afternoon. My moods are OK during the day but quicky diminish come evening. HOWEVER, the Weight loss is now kicking in, I have completely lost my appetite and have suffered from an eating disorder in my past this is scaring me. I am supposed to start taking the 50mg in the afternoon also starting monday and Im afraid to, but at the sametime the old me, the one that loved to starve herself is saying yeah yeah take it take it!!!!!!! THIS MED IS NOT FOR SOMEONE WITH A PRE_EXISTING EATING DISORDER and my Dr. new I suffered from this!!!! Not happy with this med for someone in my shoes, for anyone else who can control the effect, I would say Go For It!!

Sorry about your experience, I have to agree the anti-appetite
effect is pretty strong, i take 400 mg. I like it because it offsets my fatty meds
formerly zyprexa and now serzone. I still have to remind myself to
eat!

Hey Danni,
I have never been on Topomax, just wanted to respond anyway because I can kind of relate to how you are feeling. I am a former anorexic and I get these mixed feelings sometimes (one part of me saying, YEAH COOL YOU LOST SOME WEIGHT LOSE MORE!!!, and the other part saying YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THERE AGAIN IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!). I hope you will do what is best for you. In my experience, anorexia feels really exciting only in the beginning, and then after a while I wished I would never have "gone there"...

Hey, Danni. Good for you that you are aware of the anorexia devil whispering in your ear. Nutrition is such an important part of managing both physical and mental illnesses. You gotta eat and eat foods that are good for you. Believe me, I'm not a health-food type, but I've learned the hard way how important this is.
