Sleeping aids

Posted by janejj on January 14, 2002, at 17:30:32

Hi,

Whats a good sleeping aid to take at night ? I've been taking Ativan 1mg for about 3 months and I don't want to keep taking it . I don't want to go down the Benedryl/ Nytol road either, that stuff does weird things to me. Is there something non addictive and effective that i could ask my doctor about ?

Any ideas
Thanks Jane

I take Seroquel to help me sleep. It's an SSRI, not a benzo, but I can't call it completely non-addictive because I get insomnia if I stop taking it suddenly (but I've had problems with insomnia for years). However, you don't need to increase the dosage for it to remain effective.
My only complaint about Seroquel is that I recently had a severe reaction when I took a couple after drinking alcohol - two beers - it made me extremely sick. I guess it's not a good idea to mix alcohol with medication anyway. (Duh!)

Ambien is very effective in getting me to sleep, not as good at keeping me asleep.

Doxepin is very effective and cheap, but I can't tolerate the side effects.

howdy,

I have wondered why my doctors have not discussed sleep hygiene...You know, having a routine to your sleep, going to bed at the same time, waking up same time, seven days a week. Winding down, actually doing the same things as you go to bed.

For me, this was very important, not having too much stimulation before I go to bed (no scarey movies) including having low or no lights as I got closer to bed time.

I have just recently discovered...
surprise...earplugs!

Ambien is my drug of choice for getting to sleep, for a good six hours, but, in addition to a nocturnal inhabitant, my mate wakes up very early and I toss and turn, and the benefits of the Ambien are gone, I am going to try the earplugs...

Mouse wearing bright orange earplugs tied together like Tom Hanks in Castaway..

Ok, pretend I didn't post this...

Try this, someone at the Gas Station recommended
it to me, so it must be reputable. But I was
desperate, and the damn thing worked really
well. Better than any benadryl or other crap.

Here it is if you can find it:

Hyland's Homeopathic Insomnia
Natural Relief for Insomnia and Reslessness

"Formula":
HyoSycyamus Niger
Ignatia Amara
Kali Phosphoricum

Something like flowers or some crud. I'm taking
it to sleep while I taper Klonopin. Ask your
doctor if it is safe to take with medicine.

good luck,
not john

Hola,
I'm telling you, I swear by the herb Valerian. I think Sid said her doc told her not to take it; it doesn't mix well with ADs. My doc says it's fine with ADs and I sleep like a baby. Otherwise, Effexor would keep me up.

Valerian works wonders for most people for sleep alright as Sarah mentioned. Just a little extra though.

In 10%-15% of the population, it has an opposite effect. I'm one of them. Valerian gave me the worse case of caffeine-like jitters that I've had in quite a while. (But then caffeine has little effect on me - go figure!)

Ahh! Brain chemistry! Such a mystery.

Try remeron at 15-30mg. This is a very effective drug for sleep. I beleive remeron gets you into rem sleep and normalizes sleep patterns. I experience peaceful dreams also.

Clonidine is worth a try. It's not addictive like benzos but it is a blood pressure med so you have to taper it when getting off. Anyways, it's a very sedating drug and has very few side effects. I take it to help me sleep since I take Adderall. It has anti-anxiety and calming effects. I take .1 mg.
