What to do , what to do

Posted by tina on December 27, 2001, at 8:25:16

My father's side is all on prozac and my mother's side is all on Paxil...........

How come nothing works for me?? Am I in the "limbo" land of meds because my family is split down the middle on dx?? Bi-polar vs cyclothemia/anxiety

C'mon, Tina. Attitudes like this don't help you one bit.

Who do you think could answer your question definitively? Who knows what you inherited from each side? And you've been in this maze long enough to know darn well that everyone's life circumstances affect them in a variety of ways.

No one can pinpoint why someone is this way or that. So one side of the family is on Paxil and the other is on Prozac. So what? My mom took SSRIs for her depression. I am pretty certain that her depression was passed on to me to some degree. But you know what? I cannot tolerate SSRIs at all. Who knows why.

You are you, not a cookie cutter version of your elders -- either one side or another or a mix of both. You are not them. Find something that works for YOU! Yeah, it's a lot of work. It sucks and it's expensive, but you are worth it -- even if you don't think so.

We can't do anything about these puzzles until the researchers come up with better tests. We have to do what we can do with the resources we have today.

Please be well and take care. I'm thinking about you and sending hugs.

Love,
alli

So Tina,

What are your symptoms?
What meds have you tried?
What has members of your family been diagnosed with and what meds did they respond to?

I have been waiting anxiously for more info .... I don't know if I can help ... but I and the rest of us at Babble will try.

Spike

James,

I wish you had taken an extra moment to consider how your post might be received. It's not just what you say, but how you say it. Please don't post anything that others could take as accusatory or put others down, thanks.

Bob

Tina,
Have you had any success in deciding what to do? I didn't answer this post because I have grown rather discouraged by medications and didn't feel I had much to offer. Have you tried mood stabilizers and anti-convulsants? They at least haven't caused many problems for me.
I think that probably your main goal should be to find a good pdoc. They do exist. I hava a good one right now, after a few tries. I know it is discouraging to have to keep looking, but it is well worth the effort. There have to be a few good pdocs in your part of the country.
And at the risk of offending a few, have you looked into cognitive behavior therapy or some other sort of therapy? It's not the complete answer but it can be a good augmentation to meds.
I've been worried about you. Can you post and let us know how you're doing?

My isp quit in my area so I've had to rely on library and cafe. I get 10 hours a month for free and I'm using one of them now.
thank you for your responses. I was feeling particularly lonely and abandoned at the time I posted the 'thanks for nothing' post. I apologize for my attitude (Oh, and by the way St James..kiss my ass and don't reply to any of my future posts please)
I have taken lots of SSRI's but I can't seem to tolerate them. I have had great success on moclobemide but it pooped out and hasn't worked again since. I am now taking klonopin alone just trying to deal with the ever present anxiety. I haqve seen a doc since and we're discussing alternative therapies like CBT and herbs, diet etc.
I'll let you know how it goes. My hour is up but I want to thank you for replying. I appreciate it very much.

I agree, that post wasn't very supportive, but two wrongs don't make a right...

Also, I'd like people to feel free to *reply* as they wish (as long as they're civil). If there are replies that you'd rather not *read*, however, that's up to you.
