Can I just stop effexor 75mg/day

Posted by Dona on December 28, 2001, at 14:19:02

I was at 225 mg of effexor and really awful on it so dr cut me to 150 and I had major withdrawal--lightheaded, nausea, panic attack feelings, could hardly get out of bed. Now I am at 75mg and I want to get off this med. Since I went through the withdrawal from 225 to 150, will I go through withdrawal if I just stop the 75mg? I have been on 75mg for about 4 days. Why do they say xanax is so bad and never tell you about the horrible effects of this effexor??

Do what your doctor recommends, but I would stay at 75mg for at least 7 days, then cut back to 37.5mg for another 7 days, then stop and see what happens. Are you adding in another anti-depressant as you withdraw from the effexor? Most people need to try another AD when the side effects of one are intolerable.

Good luck,
Carly

Ps. I don't know why they don't give better warnings about effexor.

I had a horrible time trying to get off of Effexor. I did the 10 days at 37.5 and then nothing and it was awful. The first day wasn't so bad, so I thought I was going to get away without the horrible withdrawals....was I wrong! It got worse every day and, by day 5, I had my doctor paged and told her I needed help, FAST! She called in a prescrip for 25mg tablets which I've been taking for a while. When I tried to cut that dose in half, I went thru withdrawals every afternoon. I'm now on 10mg of Prozac, along with the Effexor. Last week I was able to go to 12.5mg of Effexor and 10mg of Prozac, and the Prozac makes a noticeable difference! I have virtually no withdrawal symptoms. I hope to go to zero Effexor either next week or the week after.
