Celexa side effects

Posted by genelowery on October 10, 2001, at 6:57:48

I have been on Celexa for nine days 10mg for the first seven and 20 mg for the past two days. Each day I become more tired and have recently noticed a feeling of a racing heart and shaking. Also I am a little dizzy. Will this eventually clear-up I am not sure if it is worth going through these side effects.
Thank you
Gene

I found that it took about 2 weeks for most of the side effects to clear up, but the tiredness never did. I'm actually not sure if the tiredness was due to Celexa or because I have Lupus, but whatever the cause, adding Wellbutrin has helped some.

Perhaps you need to remain at the 10 mgs dose a bit longer. Celexa is an interesting med, in that it very narrowly targets seratonin. So it can cause an agitated feeling as well as a tired feeling all at once. FYI, I was only taking 2 mgs of Celexa and getting good benefit from that small a dose. Some folks are more med sensitive than others.

In my humble opinion, I would ask you pdoc about reducing the med back to 10 mgs and see if the raciness and shaking subsides. It may take a while for your body to adjust to this med. And you don't want to go off a potentially helpful med because of unnecessary bad side effects.

Slow and low is the way to go, I think!
Hope you start to feel better.

Chloe,

I guess it depends on your body chemistry. I wish that a lower dose of Celexa would do the trick. I'm on 40mg. I went down to 20mg briefly on the advise of my pdoc so that the sexual side effects would lessen. That was not good. I felt very irritated (I think due to the Wellbutrin). My OCD was kicking in. My boyfriend noticed and asked me if I would consider going back on the 40mg and damn the sexual side effects.

I guess treating OCD is a bit different. We tend to need higher doses. Also I'm a pretty big guy. I'm also 215 pounds, almost all muscle...

Therefore I think that your mileage may vary.

Also, I did not know they made 2mg tablets of Celexa... How interesting.. ;-)

Take Care,
Simcha

Dear Simcha,
I agree that everyone is different, and that person with OCD may need a higher dose of an SSRi.

All I was trying to say to Genelowery was to decrease her dose until her body adjusted to the drugs effect. Then when the dizziness and shaking went away, she could resume her titration up to 20 mgs or more. Again, I think it's good to start at a low dose and go up slow, so the body can adjust. Some people take longer to adjust than others. But again this is just my humble opinion.

Celexa comes in a liquid form, so I am able to take small amount without having to cut up pills into atoms!

Sorry you are having sexual side effects from Celexa. That is the pits. But at least it sounds like you have an understanding b/f.
Take care
Chloe
