JOHNL (others): 'HANGOVER' effect w/ Zyprexa?

Posted by Janelle on September 2, 2001, at 17:32:41

JohnL, you and I are big proponents of Zyprexa (and I wouldn't give it up for anything right now) but I'm just realizing something that I seem to be experiencing with it and I'm wondering if you (or anyone else on it) does also:

I take just 2.5 mg of Zyprexa at night a few hours before bedtime for it to kick in and help get me to sleep; it works like a charm BUT I've noticed a pattern when I wake up in the mornings - after "enough" hours of continuous sleep, I wake up feeling "tired" and I need a cup of strong coffee to perk me out of wanting to just sleep some more (but can't because I must start my day). I'm fine within a few hours of waking, but that initial time frame is rough.

I can't wait till I finish the canister of "Lite" coffee (premixed regular/decaf) because I need full strength java to get me through the mornings. I'd been trying to cut back on my caffeine intake, but for now I'm gonna have to go back up.

Also, I wake up in the early am to use the bathroom and find that I'm a zombie with very heavy eyelids when I do so; this was not the case pre-Zyprexa. Luckily, when I get back into bed, I'm out again immediately.

So ... JohnL or anyone else who takes Zyprexa at night - do you find it has a "hangover" effect the next day? And if so, how do you deal with this? Thanks.
-Janelle

Hi there Janelle,
I have noticed the exact same feelings you describe. As of yet the only thing that helps with the hangover effect is coffee. I have coffee immediately when I get up. The hangover feeling is gone by the time I start my second coffee. The worst time though is while I'm making the coffee and waiting for it. I hate that little period. So what I do is get the coffee maker ready the night before and I plug it into a timer. I set the timer to make the coffee somewhere around the time I plan to get up. Then when I wake, I can go straight to the coffee pot for a fresh cup with no waiting. That helps a lot.

I must admit though, the hangover feeling is no where near as intense as it was with Remeron, Serzone, Trazodone, benzos, or tricyclics. As much as I dislike the Zyprexa hangover feeling, it is minor compared to all the other drugs I've tried. So I just accept it and drink some coffee.

I have noticed that if I sleep around 6 to 7 hours the hangover effect is not so bad. If I sleep 8 to 10 hours, then the hangover effect seems stronger and takes longer to wear off. But regardless, the hangover effect for me is a lot less than any other drug I've tried. It is a minor nuisance that I am willing to deal with. The coffee pot on a timer has been the best help for me in dealing with it.

Janelle,

I'm back to Zyprexa after a few months trial of Geodon and my sleep patterns have come back to normal within days. I take 7.5 mg after dinner and now can actually sleep for 7 hours. When I wake up, I am up right away but I have built up a certain tolerance to the grogginess that you are feeling. If I remember right you are new to Zyprexa and I would expect that after a few months you will also not feel the morning hangover effects. The weight gain also stopped for me after about 3 months but it's been a pain trying to get it back off.

I hope you give it a little while until the side effects settle down a little bit.

Chris

Why not just take 200 mg of a caffeine pill like NoDoz or the generic versions? That would be absorbed faster than the coffee and doesn't require cream and sugar.

You suggest No-Doz over the most wonderful buzz in the world? I think not. :)

Because I love coffee! :-)
I can feel regular coffee go to work in minutes.
I prefer black, thank you.

Hi JohnL (if you say your name the way it's spelled on here, it kinda rhymes with mine - LOL!) ... anyway, THANKS so much for your reply.

I'm SOOOOOO relieved that I'm not the only one having these "hangover" feelings the morning after taking Zyprexa for sleep. I was getting a bit concerned. And I'm "relieved" to hear that what helps me (COFFEE, at least two cups of full strength!) is also what you've found to help you. I'm able to eat breakfast before having my coffee, though!

Interesting and helpful what you mentioned about the intensity of Remeron, Serzone, Trazodone, benzos, or tricyclics, especially REMERON and SERZONE because I'm going off EffexorXR (too activating) and was going to try one of the more sedating a-d's (either Remeron or Serzone), but with the drowsy/hangover feeling from Zyprexa, the last thing I need is more sedation in my "cocktail."

Plus, my pdoc thinks that when I get up to a decent dosage of Lamictal (mood stabilizer) I will not even need any a-d! That would be a major "accomplishment"!! I hope she is right.

As much as I also dislike the Zyprexa hangover feeling, it is really just a minor nuisance compared to other possible side effects from other meds. Thanks to your input especially, I can "relax" now (no pun intended!) and just accept feeling drowsy after a full night's sleep and drink some coffee. I happen to love coffee, especially flavored ones! Thanks again,
-Janelle

SAL - re caf pills, cream 'n sugar!

Hi Sal - I'm "scared" of those caffeine pill like NoDoz or the generic versions; plus I feel like I'm taking "enough" pills between my med "cocktail" and my vitamins!

As for cream and sugar, well I only use a bit of cream and NO sugar in my coffee (luckily I happen to NOT like sugar; don't use it on anything, especially not in coffee, which incidentally, I happen to enjoy!!) Thanks,
-Janelle

2.5mg is not problem for me. As a matter of fact, I am finally getting up at a "normal" time every morning with absolutely no hangover. Count me in as a Zyprexa lover!! Collette
