Anyone taking anything for migraine?

Posted by Es on August 18, 2001, at 10:20:53

Hi,
I am trying to find something that works for migraine. I now take zomig, which does help get rid of them once they happen, but am trying to find something that will work to help prevent them. I have tried several anti-depressents, but too many side effects. The doctor wants me to try effexor, but am too scared of it after reading some of these post. The next thing the doctor has talked about is an anti-siezure medicine. I am wondering if anyone has experience migraines and what you have done to relieve them. Thank you.....

Take a look at this very recent thread ("scared to death", begun by Kell):

Effexor has worked very well for many of us, though I'm not sure how many here have taken it for migraines.

Reflexology (basically, massage/manipulation of the foot) can help prevent a migraine if you can have it done before the migraine truly develops.

I have a friend who has had chronic migraines since her teens and the poor soul is working shifts. She started celexa in February and just now has had a full month without a migraine. Hers aren't related to her menstrual cycle.

My migraines are hormone related. And effexor has helped me with other symptoms but have brought back the migraines which I haven't had for over ten years.

It was at the eight month point where I really noticed a big difference with this AD and it seems my friend too had the added benefit of her migraines lessening at the eight month point. I really think patience is a key with AD therapy, they aren't magic pills that work in an hour.

Thank you for the opinion, my migraines are chronic and not harmone related. I know that it takes patients, but just thought that I would try to get some others opinions on their experiences. I have been trying different anti-depressents for some time now, I have tried the celexa, paxil, zoloft, etc. but none have worked, just had awful side effects. I am glad to hear that you and your friend have had relief of your migraines, good luck, take care, thanks again for the response....

thank you, I checked it out and agree with everyone on the fact that things take time and everyone reacts differently to different meds. At this point don't know if I will try any more or not....

Have you tried keeping a journal or migraine diary to find things that trigger your migraines? Don't give up on medications. I know they aren't pleasant and can intefere with your life. Have you asked your doctor about other preventatives besides ADs?

Willow, thank you again, it is very nice of you to take the time and respond to my questions. To answer you, yes, he has tried me on tenormon, which is a blood pressure medicine, and has talked about trying me on an anti-seizure medicine next. He wants me to try the effexor first, and I am to see him back in about two months. He didn't think that the wellbutrin would help, either, but said anything is worth a try. I am tired of trying all this medicine and have all the side effects, but agree with you that a person has to go through trial and error to find the right medicine for them.
When I was given the wellbutrin and the effexor perscription, was told to try wellbutrin and then the effexor, but I don't know how to go from one to the other, do I go off the wellbutrin and then wait two weeks and start the effexor, or can I go directly on the effexor? And the other question I have, is how do I stop the wellbutrin? I was on 300mg. a day, and then went to l50mg. in the morning and split one to take 75 in the afternoon, today, I have just taken the 150mg. this morning and I'm not taking one this afternoon.

Es

I can't help you with the wellbutrin as I'm not familiar with it. You can do a search on this board and I'm sure you'll get some information. I do know that the effexor isn't so easy to quit.

BEST WISHES

I started Neurontin for FM pain, sleep and TLE ab out 2 years ago, and my migraines dropped dramatically in number.

Thank you for your reply, I have a question for you, did it have any side effects? Did you gain weight...etc? My pharmisist just told me about it yesterday and she suggested that I ask the doctor about it. I am glad to hear that you have relieve of the migraines...I am hoping to have some relieve, soon. Take care, Es
