What is meant by FLASHBACKS???

Posted by Janelle on July 16, 2001, at 22:06:16

I've read references to people having "flashbacks" - what does this mean in terms of a psychiatric perspective? Thanks.

I can tell you what it might mean from a meds point of view... After discontinuation from a med, to the point where the withdrawl symptoms have subsided, it is possible to experience later side effects of the drug just as if you were initialy taking it. The drug that isnt metabolised is stored in our bodies, and then later released producing the same effect as when we had taken the drug initially.

If someone can correct me, please do.

It could also mean a flash back (like a memory overcoming you suddenly) to abuse, or being in the army (like vietnam vets) or anything traumatic.

What MM said. It usually means the person has suffered some sort of traumatic event, and the "flashback" is when they sort of feel like they're reexperiencing the traum

(There are also hallucinogen-related flashbacks -- a little different, but the same general idea.)

I have painful flashbacks every 5 minutes. They usually are of something uncomfortable or embarrassing that I have done or failed to do in the past, and it DOESN'T have to do with war or killing. People think PTSD is just a combat-thing and I and the DSM-IV disagree.

I'm not on any meds right now. They might not be as traumatic in my case. It's just a sudden memory of or feeling I had in a situation I made an ass out of myself in I guess, or when someone was mean to me (like telling me I'm a psycho kind of stuff). If that's not what you were talking about, sorry.

I had to ask my husband how long I had them, or reacted to them, and he said for at least two and a half years. (Honestly, I don't know why he stuck with me.) I don't know how new this pain is for you, but with time it may get better. Though anything that reminds me of it can trigger hostility or get me in panic mode, not the same as a panic attack, just hypervigilant.

I talked alot about what happened to my husband and then I guess I forgot about it. Though he hasn't. I guess dumping the burden on someone else can help.
