Hello, just curious out of these 3 what is more sedating.Remeron,Trazodone or Zyprexa? I am on Zoloft and 2 mg of Klonopin and have been given the choice of all 3 and I want to try the best one. Thanks

Remeron is by far the most sedating but not the type of sedation you might be looking for. But if you need sleep, watch out! Remeron in the smaller doses (paradoxically) will have you out like a light - and for a long time.

I don't know if trazodone is the most sedating, but one never develops a tolerance for it, so its sedating properties remain the same throughout the duration of treatment with it.

What makes Trazodone keep it's sedative quality? I know Remeron has an effect on the Histamine 1 receptor but what about Trazodone? Or Zyprexa? You mentioned in another post about Seroquel...Is this more sedating than Zyprexa? I have trouble falling asleep and need a relaxing effect.Even on 2 or 3 mg of Klonopin I can't relax enough to go to sleep. Thanks

My vote is for Zyprexa. But what sort of sedation do you need -- just a sleep aid, or something that will work all day to counteract psychomotor activation? Zyprexa is very long-lasting.

Low-dose Remeron is supposed to be very sedating also. (I started at 30 mg, a moderate dose which was not at all sedating for me, so I don't know firsthand.)

5 mg is a good starting dose (the lowest pill size is 2.5 mg, and they aren't scored and don't break easily).

I think Ambien would be a better and safer choice, though. The usual dose for adults is 10 mg; if you're over 60ish, you might need to take 5 mg, and there's always the occasional person who needs 15 or 20 mg. Ambien has two main disadvantages: it doesn't last very long (I get a good four hours of sleep out of it, other people have better luck though), and it tends to work poorly unless taken on an empty stomach.

Zyprexa is *very* long-lasting: you might discover that the amount you need to take for sleep also makes you groggy during the daytime. It also carries the risks associated with all the dopamine-antagonist/antipsychotic drugs, although much less so than the older antipsychotic drugs (Thorazine, Stelazine, etc.). Seroquel is another of the newer antipsychotics; it doesn't last as long as Zyprexa, so it might be better if Zyprexa causes daytime sedation.

A downside of all these drugs is that they're expensive.
