My pdoc tests blood level of Amitriptyline, which I've been on again for several months. A few months ago, at 200 mg a day, my lab results were 176. She adds Amitriptyline and Nortriptyline levels to arrive at that sum.
I got my results today on the latest test which showed a sum of 56. I'm still taking 200 mg a day.
In our phone conversation, I mentioned that I had started Metamucil to deal with constipation. I have always used Senokot.
The label on Metamucil says to take it 2 hours before or after taking any meds so, of course, I ignored it. Evidently, it can or will bind to meds if you don't follow the instructions. Duh!
I don't know if anyone can use this information but it has been a slow day here so I thought I would pass it, so to speak, on.Phil

Don't use Metamucil too much or your body will develop a dependency on it.

Thanks for the heads-up. I don't use Metamucil, but I use FiberChoice three times a day. I take it with my other meds sometimes. I don't know if FiberChoice has the same warning--I'll read the label tonight.SalArmy4Me,
Why do you think Metamucil creates dependence? It's simply a fiber supplement, and it is universally recommended by doctors for chronic constipation.Constipation is one of my favorite subjects since it is actually overriding my well-controlled bipolar as problemo numero uno for me. So, if anyone else has been diagnosed with IBS-C and wants to shoot the breeze about the effects of psychotropics on C, I'm game. I swear (and my psychiatrist agrees) that Wellbutrin caused my IBS-C.

I have found that flax seeds are great for constipation- better than metamucil or even senakote type laxatives.You can buy them in bulk from a natural food store and grind them up in a coffee grinder. Three teaspoons in the morning mixed with cereal or juice, or whatever does the trick for me. Tastes good too!

I posted the same thing about flax seeds...they are good! I like prunes; or do we call them dried plums now?
Appreciate the input folks. Just trying to let others know how much Metamucil can affect meds.

Very funny.
They also had the Bass o Matic blender where you would put the whole fish in a blender. But, that's another story'

The label on FiberChoice doesn't say anything about interactions with medications, though I worry because it has a similar mechanism of action. Hmm...

yup, had no problems with C until got on the wellbutrin. absolutely sure it's the wellbutrin. -terra
