Any men on Effexor Xr out there?

Posted by N.P. on June 1, 2001, at 1:13:13

Why do they all prescribe Effexor Xr these days?
My family doctor prescribed it to me (and I couldn't stay on it for more than 3 days) and now my husband has been prescribed it for his anger problem.
Does it work for men? Side effects? Anyone who have ever successfully wiened off? His anger attacks are horrible, but I was expecting anything but this drug.
So many negative posts. Help! Any comments...?

Hey N.P., I too was initially started on Effexor Xr
for anger management-Road-Rage etc. Although I feel
a general calming from mad-episodes I think the isolated
anger flare ups are much worse. I am also currently taking
Welbutrin daily as well to enhance the effect of Effexor.
As I said in an earlier post I am not happy with the results
and am seeing a new Pdoc to change my treatment.

I too am worried about all the neg posts about withdrawal
andlong term effects. Something my gen/prac doc never
mentioned when I started this course of treatment.

I mainly now suffer from a bad sleep cycle and loss of
sex drive, which in itself contributes to the flare ups.
Loss of sleep and loss of sex doesn't make you a happy
camper.

Just know your not alone, if your married or in a
relationship, you need to deal with it as a couple.
I am fortunate that my partner is very supportive and
realizes alot of the time my reactions are the drugs
or at least are enhanced by them. Somewhere out there
is the right mix of medication it just takes time to
find it.

Good luck to you both.

N.P., It did work for me, I'm a 42 yr old male. But yes, side effects is the reason I ended use after a little over a year of use. High B.P., weight gain, liver function issues. But the drug did do what it was supposed to do for depression and anxiety...

Coming off it was very difficult, took several attempts of different methods. Reducing the dose slowly over time, and taking it every day is what finally worked. I ended use after weaning down to ~10mg a day for a week. But I still had some withdrawal several days after not taking any.
