Zoloft, Wellbutrin Bulimia

Greetins all

A quick note, hoping SOMEBODY out there is walking down the same road as I am.

Been on Zoloft for two years for depression. I am also bulimic since 9 yrs old. (41 now) The Zoloft curbed the need to eat and barf and took away the depression. However, no sex life to speak of and goddamn it I've gained 30 pounds in those two years.

Zoloft really jump-started my IBS, so I asked to be changed to Wellbutrin (heard good things about it)I was on it for 4 days and had to stop...I was about 3 steps away from becoming homicidal.

Doc told me I really need the SSRI's not the dopamine.

So started Effexor today after detoxing for 3 weeks.

I am so discourgaged. At this point, I'd rather just go back to being depressed, and being bulimic. Food was a great coping tool. On Zoloft, I didn't feel the need to eat, but I got fat. Being fat is a bulimic's worst nightmare.

Anybody care to share? I really need to hear some words of experience here.

Thanks all
Helen

I concluded that a trial of nefazodone would be great for you:

Papp, Laszlo A. MD et al. Efficacy of Open-Label Nefazodone Treatment in Patients With Panic Disorder. J of Clin Psychopharmacology. 20(5):544-546, Oct 2000:
"Fifteen patients with panic disorder participated in a 12-week treatment trial with open-label nefazodone. Nefazodone was well-tolerated with minimal side effects; none of the patients reported sexual dysfunction, and only one patient experienced weight gain. Although the response rate was lower than that found with most other antipanic medications, given its favorable side effect profile, nefazodone may be a good alternative for patients apprehensive about potential adverse drug reactions."

Devlin, Michael J. et al. Obesity: What Mental Health Professionals Need to Know. Amer J of Psychiatry. 157(6):854-866, June 2000:
"Newer antidepressants, including bupropion, venlafaxine, and nefazodone, are generally not associated with weight gain. An exception is mirtazapine, which, like the tricyclic antidepressants, is associated with weight increase."

Keller, Martin B et al. A Comparison of Nefazodone, the Cognitive Behavioral-Analysis System of Psychotherapy, and Their Combination for the Treatment of Chronic Depression. NEJM. 342(20):1462-1470, May 18, 2000:

"Weight gain was rare, with no instances in the nefazodone or psychotherapy group and an incidence of 3.1 percent in the combined-treatment group. Sexual dysfunction (including impotence, psychosexual dysfunction, anorgasmia, and abnormal ejaculation) occurred in 3.5 percent of the patients in the nefazodone group, none of the patients in the psychotherapy group, and 3.5 percent of the patients in the combined-treatment group."

Helen,

I suffered from a relapse of bulimia after having no problem with it for 12 years. It came on after We llbutrin was added to my Zoloft and Depakote was added (for BP II and migraine control) on top, which caused significant weight gain.

My hypothesis (and I'm not educated as many on this board are on the chemistries) is that Zoloft left me with problems with impulse control, hence the bulimic eating patterns. The Wellbutrin gave me agitation, which gave me the "what the hell, what's the point" attitude that put me over the edge. And once I began taking Topamax, it drove me below my set point weight, which is one theory on what triggers anorexia. I lost 40 pounds, but had many negative side effects there, too, which you may be very familiar with if you are DX with not just one disorder but both.
