Geodon side-effects

Posted by Robin L. Rouch on May 23, 2001, at 18:02:04

Has anyone found a comprehensive list of Geodon side-
effects? I have recently started experiencing delusions
and hallucinations (I am bipolar, NOT schizophrenic) and
would like to know if they can be attributed to Geodon.
If not Geodon, can they be attributed to Lamictal. I
have found no information leading me to either conclusion.

Geodon prescribing information per Pfizer

Pfizer has the prescribing information for Geodon at http://www.pfizer.com/hml/hml.html but it's a .pdf file, so you'll need Acrobat Reader to view it.

I take 350 mg of Lamictal per day and have never experienced the symptoms you describe. I'm bipolar II.

Hi Robin.

Based upon some of the activating effects reported by some people here, I would say that Geodon cannot be ruled out as the cause. Zyprexa, a drug that is some ways similar to Geodon, has been observed to precipitate mania. However, Lamictal has been reported infrequently to induce mania as well. I would be inclined to lower the dosage or discontinue Geodon temporarily to see if these symptoms disappear. If you were OK with Lamictal by itself and became mildly psychotic once Geodon was added, the choice of which to test first is obvious. Is there any chance that you are schizoaffective rather than just bipolar?

Craig, thanks for the link.

According to my psychiatrist and counselor, there
is no chance I am schizophrenic -- I am bipolar
type II. All of my psychotic symptoms have been
associated with medication and have been seen as
a form of mania. Thanks for the input.

Robin,

Some people cannot take anti-psychotics because
it can cause you to have psychosis. I've read that
if you don't have psychosis with your bipolar,
that the anti-psychotic can actually cause it!
Weird, huh? But I do know of some people that don't
have psychosis and do very well on an anti-psychotic...
I'd say it's the Geodon that is doing this to you.
Talk to your pdoc and see what she/he says about this.
Good luck to you and hang in there! : )

I believe you were asked if you were schizoaffective, which is different from schizophrenia. My son is bipolar 1 with psychotic features- schizoaffective is a more accurate diagnosis for him. Karen.
