Parnate and pain killers

Posted by Caty on May 15, 2001, at 14:23:56

I am new here, so if this has been covered in a previous
post, please let me know. I take parnate and am having
some back problems. I'm trying to find a pain killer
I can take. My doctor gave me Vicodin, which does
nothing for me. Every drug that I check says it should
not be taken with an MAOI. I have checked things in
the the Darvocet family and the Percocet family. Are
these warnings valid, or are they trying to cover all
bases? Any suggestions/experiences would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks...

CATY, THE CLOSEST I CAN COME TO YOUR DEAL IS THAT I WAS TAKING NARDIL AND HAD A MIGRAINE, SO I CALLED THE PHARMACIST AND ASKED HIM IF I COULD TAKE A PERCOCET, HE TOLD ME THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM, SO I TOOK THE PERCOCET AND HAD NO PROBLEM. BUT THAT WAS NARDIL, I KNOW THERE CLOSELY RELATED BUT I WOULD CALL YOUR PHARMACIST AND ASK HIM OR HER WHAT THEY WOULD RECOMMEND.

Immediate onset of excitement, sweating, rigidity, and hypertension can occur when monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are used concurrently with vicodin and darvocet. The combination of narcotic analgesics and MAOIs should usually be avoided if possible.

They're trying to cover all bases (especially the ones on their *sses < g >).

Oxycodone, which is a step up from hydrocodone among the opioid ("narcotic") pain killers, is safe to take with MAOIs (as is hydrocodone). (Percocet is oxycodone with Tylenol; Vicodin is hydrocodone with Tylenol.)

The only opioid PKs that I can think of that are definitely unsafe are Ultram and Demerol. (Morphine is considered the preferred PK to use as a substitute for Demerol in patients on MAOIs.)There have been a couple of published incidents involving propoxyphene (Darvon) with MAOIs, as Sal notes. Darvon is very weak, though, and if Vicodin didn't work then Darvon probably won't either.

Hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to ask about specific PKs that you're considering.
