Paxil Scares Me Sh**less, HELP!!!!

Posted by tina on March 17, 2001, at 20:07:41

Okay, I admit, I did a stupid thing. When I got my prescrip filled for Paxil I signed onto the net and researched it. Now, I'm freaking out. I've read the most horrific stories about it here on PB and on other sources and I stare at these little pills and can't bring myself to take them. They cost me $60 and I am too afraid to even try them.
Please please tell me a GOOD story, a success story.
I've read about serotonin syndrome with Paxil and Elavil(which I take now) and severe nausea(which I already have just about every day) and there are some who actually say "this drug should never be given to humans" and I read about a law suit in CA over Paxil side effects ruining someone's life.
HELP ME
I'm really scared of this stuff.
Tina

Paxil has been around for over 10 years now. If it really caused widespread and unusually horrible side-effects, we would know this by now--and it would be taken off the market.

I took Paxil for three months with no significant side-effects.

Don't worry Tina! It's not too bad. Most of the unspeakable Paxil adverse events are... well, let's put it this way: Statistically, you're much more likely to be killed in a car accident.

I took Paxil (LOTS OF PAXIL) for depression and OCD and the main problem I experienced was sweating... ok for me because I don't sweat very much naturally. I switched eventually, but only because I wasn't very effective.

Thanks All! I Took it This am

I really appreciate the responses guys and gals.
My aunt is on it and I talked to her at length as well and I'm not so scared anymore. Thanks to all for responding. I'll keep ya updated.
(I'm not so keen on getting into a car accident either Sal :)
Peace
Tina

I took Paxil for several years, with no major side-effects, and it helped me a great deal until it pooped out. At that point, I went from 20mg/day to 60mg/day to get it working again, but all I got was periodic flushing and no more mood improvement. My mother has also been taking it for the last couple of years and hasn't had any problems. Everyone's different, but I think the odds are strongly in your favor.
I hope it works well for you, too.

Tina - Sorry that I didn't answer sooner. Just thought that I'd let you know that the Paxil can increase anxiety in the first 2 to 4 weeks (you may already be starting to experience this at the time of this posting). This is totally normal and the anti-anxiety effects will start to kick in at about the 6 to 8 week mark (& you will probably see an increase in anti-anxiety effect, as you stay on the med).

•Word of Warning - Incidious Weight Gain•
It may be a good idea to keep a food diary of everything you eat. Also, get out and exercise. It is far easier to keep the weight from being put on than it is to take it off, once gained. The weight gain with Paxil seems to be more incidious, as you will not notice it for 4 to 6 months; and then you realize that your clothes don't fit. This seems to happen overnight in most people, but when a history is done, most people have changed their eating habits (eg more Big Macs, more Doritos, more salty snacks, than they usually have).

I hope that you are doing okay. Hang in there babe, and keep us posted on your progress. - Cam
