Question about PMS

Posted by bissie66 on February 21, 2001, at 9:14:15

Does anyone notice their symptoms are as bad as, or worse, when they are ovulating as the week prior to menses? I've been really depressed the last couple days, and I'm ovulating. It feels hormonal, but since my meds have been working, I haven't been getting PMS. I am very alarmed that it has returned, if that is in fact what it is.

I have just started reading Dr. Eliz. Vliet's book, "Screaming to Be Heard", and she discusses PMS, PMDD at length. You might want to take a look.

Omega fatty acids may help (PMS-ers please read)

Hi bissie,

You may want to let a few months go by and see if there is a pattern of becoming more depressed before your period. If this is the first month that it has happened in a while, it may be a coincidence rather than PMS. I would talk to your doctor.
I've had PMS for a long time. It would cause depression and major irritability. However, I started taking omega fatty acid supplements, and the problem seems to have decreased noticeably. there are several kinds of omega fatty acids: There are omega-3s, omega-6s, and omega-9s. The omega 3s and 9s are good at fighting PMS, whereas the 9s are not (they're the fats in junk like McDonald's fries). I THINK that's correct. Omega 3s are found in fish oil and flax seed oil, and 9s are in borage oil, evening primrose oil, and I think also in flax oil. I take a spoonful of flax oil every morning, and a capsule of borage oil at dinner. Since I started doing this, I noticed that the PMS has eased.
A bonus is that these oils make your skin soft, smooth, and more even-colored. They have LOTS of other health benefits, but I of course have been most interested in their effect on PMS.
Just some notes -- Flax oil needs to be kept refrigerated, and the most potent form is taken by spoon, rather than by capsule. Look for the brands that have the highest number of omega-3 and omega-9 milligrams, NOT just the highest number of oil milligrams.
Borage oil is the most potent form of omega-6. Look for brands that have the highest milligrams of GLA.
All of these things can be found in health food stores. A bottle of flaxseed oil costs me about $8 and lasts a month. A bottle of borage oil capsules cost about $15 and can last two months, roughly. You may get greater benefit from taking more than one spoonful of flaxseed oil and more than one capsule of borage oil, but the extra cost may be worth it to reduce your suffering.
Keep in mind that it might take two or three months to notice a difference. Don't give up before giving it several months. The nice effect on your complexion shows up much quicker though.
I hope this helps others, because it has helped me.

Do the fatty acids make you gain weight? Like if you are trying to limit the amount of fat you eat, do you have to include the amount of fat in the pills in the total amount of fat you are eating per day?

Borage contains a cumulatively poisonous alkaloid that I believe is hepatotoxic

The information that I put in the previous is most of what I know about these oils. What I know about them, I read in magazines that are supported with advertising dollars of the companies who make the supplements. However, there are scientific studies that confirm the nutritional and anti-PMS value of the oils. The best way to get them is by eating "fatty" fish like salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, and others. I'm not sure about the possible toxicity of flax and borage oil, but I know that eating fish is fine. You just have to eat it regularly to get enough of the omega oils. As far as weight goes, these oils should not make you gain weight as long as you are not overdoing them and are eating a healthy diet overall. It's much, much better to cut out the fat from things like french fries than to cut out good fats like the omegas. I would recommend doing a search on a site like webmd.com or medscape.com to get more info.
