Lack of Stamina!

Posted by box986ster on January 29, 2001, at 0:54:17

I have been taking effexor (225mg) for close to 2 yrs. I was taking remeron and dexadrine also but have stopped. I take 5mg pindolol to help the effexor. Over these two yrs. my weight has steadily increased. But the worst thing is I cannot work out like I always have in the past. I have no stamina. I used to run 5 miles without much trouble. Now I do well to run slow for 60 seconds before I have to stop and rest! My P Doc doesn't know why this would be. If anyone can help me understand this, P L E A S E follow up!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou,
box986ster

Back when I was taking various SSRIs @ moderately high doses I had to give up weight-training. My limbs would become fatigued so quickly that I could no longer train to anything like 'true' exhaustion, making gains impossible. This of course rendered the whole exercise pointless.

Like you I found the phenomenon to be puzzling to say the least, but at least you're not alone!

Jah.

You do not mention how your doing now and if your off SSRI's are you back to working out? I conisider working out integral to my mental health, so this is troubling me greatly.

PS I just found out a friend took his life tonight. He had been divorced, remarried, lost his job and divorced again. To see him you would never have known he was deppressed. He left two children. With all the meds I just find it hard to beleive anyone could just give up. But unless we are in their minds we just do not know how they feel!

Thanks for response JahL

I am also on pindolol & effexor xr...

still have muscle fasics (twitches )& weakness from time to time ( from effexor xr )& still exercise moderately..

pindolol & all of the beta blockers decrease maximal exercise tolerance. pindolol does this less than the pure blockers ( it is a partial agonist as well). you can find quite a few papers/abstracts online on exercise & beta blockers. Beta agonists like epi & norepi & dopamine, etc increase heart & muscle strength during exercise...

also because, effexor elicits muscular fasiculations, stabilizes and changes norepi, epi & serotonin release, all of which play a role in exercise metabolism.... effexor probably plays a role as well...

I have seen no scientific publications on just what the role is & would like to read any you find..
