Trimipramine (Surmontil) - Anyone ???

Posted by SLS on January 5, 2001, at 9:12:08

I am thinking of trying trimipramine, but I don't know very much about it and only rarely see it used.

Can anyone give me some feedback about trimipramine?

For anyone who has used trimipramine:

- How well does it work, and what else are you taking?
- Why did you choose trimipramine?
- Is it sedating?
- What side effects have you experienced?
- Would you recommend trimipramine?

Much gratitude guys...

Sincerely,
Scott

Didn't work at all for me & I took it alone.

> - Why did you choose trimipramine?

My GP chose it after Paxil/Prozac poop-out principally because a) I hadn't tried a tricyclic & b) I have chronic insomnia & I guess he thought it'd help (it did a little).

> - Is it sedating?

YES. Best taken @ bedtime for a good night's sleep. Can be hard to wake up on higher doses tho' I don't remember feeling too sedated during the day.

> - What side effects have you experienced?

Perhaps a little increase in agitation/depersonalisation but not a great deal else.

> - Would you recommend trimipramine?

Well like every other AD it didn't work 4 me but I certainly wouldn't dissuade you from trying. If insomnia is an issue then it could be a logical choice.

Rgds,
Jah.

Trimipramin is a typical tricyclic antidepressant.
It doesnt have any direct action on serotonin and noradrenalin which is common for the tricyclica.
Trimipramin is (as far as i know) the most sedating
antidepressant. It is often used for depression with insomnia. This comes from its effect on histamin. I took it over one year and had very good and fast sucess in my sleep quality. But there are some points to know: 1. You should take the hole dose 2 hours before you go to bed. Otherwise it leads to daytime sleepiness. 2. The side effects are usually not strong and bad when you increase the dose very slowly (25mg/week....use drops!!) but you may gain wait. 3. I think that the effect on mood is not as good as the SSRI and other tricyclica (that means more limited). Its more for depression with anxiety than melancholic types. 4. It has a weak dopamin antagonism (structural similarity to the neuroleptic chlorpromazin) which could be favorable for depressions with mild psychotic symptoms !?
In Switzerland it is very often prescribed because of the mild side effects.
I hope you can make decision if Surmontil is a drug for you.
But you know there is no one who can predict if its good for you or not. Its allways a try. Try and error thats how its works even in the year 2001.
Good luck
Ben

P.S. I am sorry for my bad english!

Effects nor-e and 5ht to some extent, or it would not be a TCA. Histine systems have no AD effects. Is sedating, but not as much as doxipin. I switched from doxipin (the most sedating) to Surmontil as the effects on NT's are close to the same while it has less sedation. I was also looking for less of a flattened effect.
Somewhat sucessful in this reguard. Was using it as a augment to Effexor.

I found Remeron to be a better choice, close to a TCA, without AM sedation or flattened effect.

I took Surmontil augmented with Cytomel for about 8 years. It gave me the longest remission I have ever had (6-8 years). It was prescribed after almost all treatments then available (including several series of ECTs) had failed or pooped out. I did gain weight on it - slowly - and it was sedating. It was hard to get up in the a.m. I needed high doses to make it work. I tend to be very slowed down when depressed so it was not my pdoc's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc... choice. The longest remission since then has been about 10 months. Sigh.

Hi Scott,

I tried Surmontil for a while, but i stopped it due to memory problems (a was a student at that time). For me it wasn't too sedating, no weight increase, but constipation.
Sigolène.

Thank you, all.
