Pondimin - an anorectic drug?

Posted by JackieJ on October 31, 2000, at 8:56:48

Hello

Does anyone know about pondimin?I have gained 50 lbs in the last year due to many different meds my pdoc has put me on trying to find the right combination. I am currently on 400 mg of wellbutrin, soon to be 600 mg and am decreasing my prozac from 40 mg to zero within the next month or so. I am now very depressed about this weight gain to the point that I don't want to see anyone or go anywhere. Any thoughts?

i believe that pondimin, fenfluramine, was the drug that caused problems in the fen-phen combination. i also have the same problem with weight gain from the meds, 40 pounds, and i can't get it off. my doctor, after much begging, let me have phentermine, the other half of fen-phen. it would have helped me i believe, but at the time, i was changing meds and my anxiety was overwhelming. i quit the phentermine because of that.

even though my doc did not feel it was a "good idea" to give me the diet pills, he could tell how much of an impact it had on my depression.

As a matter of fact, i'm going to the doctor today to discuss going back on the phentermine now that i am "stabalized". i know how you feel, talk to your doctor and let him know how you feel.

good luck
angela

Hi Jackie,

Pondimin (fenfluramine) has been removed from the US market in 1997 after several cases of heart valve problems were reported by the Mayo Clinic with the use of "phen-fen" ("phen" for phentermine; "fen" for fenfluramine). As an offshoot of this report, dexfenfluramine (Redux), another appetite-suppressant drug, was also taken of the US market. Phentermine is still available.

Thanks Sunnely,

I guess I'm just looking for SOMETHING to help with the weight gain. I wonder how many docs have given their patients some of these meds to make them GAIN weight. Why can't the opposite be true for those of us who have gained and need to lose.

At least we're not alone! It seems as though most of us have gained weight on our meds, doesn't it?

I have this theory that Calvin is responsible for this: since we're sick, but should be able to 'just stop whining' about it, the drugs are punishment as well as treatment. After all, if they just treated the disorder, we'd never know that we were bad, right?

Just like oral contraceptives, if only rich powerful white men got depression, you can bet that ADs would lead to an increase in lean muscle mass, weight loss, regrow hair, and make our breath fresh and minty!

OK, just a really twisted thought. But some of you smiled a little, and was that an unwilling chuckle I heard from over there?
