trying out buprenorphine

Posted by Elizabeth on March 2, 1999, at 19:04:46

My doctor and I decided it would be worthwhile to add buprenorphine to my Parnate, since I can only take a low dose of Parnate. I thought that you guys might be interested since we'd discussed the use of opiates for depression before.

I started yesterday. Administration (intranasal) is a bit of a pain. Also, it is causing the same side effect that all the other opiates I've taken have caused: itching! (Anyone know how common a side effect this is?) Also a little bit of dizziness and dry mouth, and of course constricted pupils. My doctor says he will call in a prescription for Claritin tomorrow (he doesn't want me to take the "drowsy" antihistamines).

On the plus side, I'm feeling much less anxious and tense, and more energetic and motivated. My appetite (and general enjoyment of activities) also seems to be improving.

BTW, another drug that is supposedly good (and that comes in a nice convenient pill form in the U.S.) is Ultram. This is something that shouldn't be combined with an SSRI or an MAOI, but it is safe and, apparently, effective on its own. It's a bit of a serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor as well as a partial opiate (mu) agonist.

Be careful with Ultram:

addiction to meds

Buprenorphine also can be addictive, as, I suppose, can any mu agonist. How do you think the two drugs compare to each other in this regard? Or to, say, Xanax? (A lot of people with panic disorder complain that their doctors refuse to prescribe Xanax on the grounds of "addiction" potential. Even people who don't have any history of substance abuse.)

Ultram's advantages over buprenorphine are: available in pill form in U.S.; easier to find (it's commonly used so pharmacies are likely to have it in stock); more is known about it since it's used more; mild 5-HT and NE reuptake inhibition as well as opiate receptor binding.

By the way, I don't seem to get "high" from opioids (codeine etc. as well as buprenorphine). The only drug that I'd say makes me euphoric is Ambien, but I don't think I've ever abused or been dependent on that.

I have found that ultram is not only effective for pain, but for treating depression as well. I have a lower back problem and was prescribed ultram. since I started taking the drug, my energy level has risen and I feel great. Both emotionally and physically. Brian

Trying out tramadol to fight fever?!

Posted by Dennis on May 26, 2000, at 20:06:08

In reply to Re: trying out tramadol, posted by brian vanhoy on March 30, 1999, at 16:14:23

I am someone who is allergic to Panadol,
Tylenol and Aspirin. I am also allergic
to anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and sulphur.

Thus, when it comes to fighting fevers, I am
down to cold baths, sponging and drinking lots
of water.

Recently, a doctor prescribed tramadol for my
fever, and it seemed to work. Thus far, my readings on Tramadol have not suggested that
it is suitable for treatment of fever.

Can any medical professional give insight
on the use of Tramadol for fever?

Thanks,
Dennis.
