zoloft to wellbutrin

Posted by Susan on April 25, 2000, at 9:14:14

My son was on zoloft and now is being switched to wellbutrin. He started the zoloft when he was diagnosed with depressive disorder and was planning his suicide, He' almost 12.
On the zoloft his depression lifted but he had a different laugh almost maniacle, scary. His impulsivity went up and his tone when he would get angry would be so powerful and scary.
I hate the idea of having him on medication but pray it helps. I need feedback about what it's like when you switch from zoloft to wellbutrin and what we can expect to maybe happen. Any body out there who's been through this before? I feel so alone!

What is his diagnosis exactly? It sounds like he might have been experiencing hypomania, in which case wellbutrin could be a good switch, since some psychiatrists believe that it is less likely to induce mania. Still, I would look into adding a mood stabilizer. Most people here have gotten over the whether to medicate and only ask with what.

Hope this helps,
Abby

If your son is bipolar, a
mood stabilizer and NO
antidepressants would
be best. Susan2

He was diagnoses as having a depresive disorder and only that. I've been wondering about bipolar too.

There is a website called bipolar child that may help you. They should have lots of information to help you clarify whether or not your son could be bipolar.
