One Stop Mental Shopping ... Is It Possible????

Posted by Snowie on April 23, 2000, at 18:28:42

I have a friend who is fortunate to have one stop mental shopping. He has a psychiatrist associated with a California university who is his therapist, psychologist, psychopharmacologist, and psychiatrist -- all neatly packaged into one person. He sees his pdoc twice a month for almost an hour each visit, and his pdoc also prescribes his meds. Best of all, his pdoc is surprisingly inexpensive, even for CA. My friend explains that it's easier to bond with one person, as opposed to having one person for drug management and another for talk therapy, which certainly makes sense to me. My friend thinks I should be able to find that here in Florida, but it's not so easy. My pdoc is basically a psychopharmacologist ... if I need someone to talk to, I have to go elsewhere. In the meantime, I'm paying my pdoc to prescribe a benzo (and he gets annoyed if I even mention wanting to try another med), and I'm looking for someone for therapy, but my friend says I should be able to find a pdoc who does both. In the Tampa, Florida area, I've yet to find such a person -- at least not one that I can afford. Of course, I haven't checked with USF yet. Any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations?

Is there a university nearby with a reputable psychiatry department? Dr. Bob has a number of links and a list of universities.

I found my doctor at the university here, an osteopath who is my psychotherapist and prescribes drugs (he also teaches at the university). I have been seeing him weekly for more than 2 years.

Some folks here in babbleland think it's better to have a psychotherapist and someone to prescribe drugs. whatever works...

Allison,

Yes, the University of South Florida has a psychiatry department, I think. I realize that some people here prefer to keep them separate (as does my sister), but I would prefer to get everything from one person. How else can my pdoc know what to prescribe for me unless he really talks to and understands me, which my pdoc doesn't? IMHO, he really can't. Where do I find the link to the list of universities with pdocs who do both, or should I just take a chance and call USF? Thanks bunches!

Snowie,
If you go to the top of this page to the links link, and then to to the "psychiatry departments" link, there is a list, but I didn't see any Florida mentions. Maybe Dr. Bob would have a suggestion. You might mine the links at the top of the page first though to find out more.

Just to clarify, when I got my referral, I wasn't asking for one-stop shopping. It just turned out that way. I do like being able to talk with someone who can see the whole picture of what's happening simultaneously in my life and with my meds.

Good luck.

Allison,

That's my feeling exactly. I did call the University of South Florida and they're setting me up for an appointment with a pdoc, so hopefully I'll have the same luck as you.

Thanks a lot for responding.

Snowie,
I think it depends on the doctor's preference. As I've called the doctors on the limited list provided by my insurance, I've found some who will *only* do meds if they're also doing therapy. (Which is surprising in this case, since my insurance won't pay for therapy with an MD---makes me wonder why they're on the list.)
