Side effects on Effexor XR?

Posted by Racer on April 13, 2000, at 22:56:00

My computer is still down, but I'm online for ten minutes thanks to a friend.

Meanwhile, I've been having nasty head aches and not sleeping much lately. Could the Effexor be part of that? I know that in combination with Prozac, the side effects of each can be more noticeable. Could that be the trouble?

PS: is Nonny around? I could use that little boost I get from flirting...

Wanted to send a quick hello to ya, and comment on the prozac half of the equation. I don't have any experience with Effexor, but do have experience with prozac alone and in combo. Any which way I took it, I had head-aches and real trouble sleeping. No matter which med I thought was causing me the trouble, it always went away with the withdrawal of the prozac.

Hope someone else can add a little more wisdom here in regards to the Effexor. It's nice to see you again Racer, although I hope you feel better soon, and can visit without the unpleasant side-effects. Good Luck!

Racer, I've heard people complain that headaches and sleeplessness and/or sleepiness can be side effects of Effexor (I've never had those luckily). Combining two AD's might also be a problem (ask CamW about combining Prozac and Effexor). I've never taken them together, just separately. Talk to CamW and ask your pdoc! Hope things get better for you.

Racer - Headaches, especially at the start of therapy, are side effects of both Effexor and Prozac. They usually fade with time, as your body adjusts. Prozac can be taken with Effexor, but I am not sure you would have much additive antidepressant effect over using each agent individually (unless you are taking higher doses of Effexor, but then you have to start to watch for serotonin syndrome - excess serotonin). The excess serotonin may be a result of too much reuptake blockade, but this would be very patient variable. Mild serotonin syndrome could be some of the additive side effects you are seeing, but at the levels you are mentioning is most likely not dangerous.

Prozac is sometimes used to wean someone who is having problems with Effexor withdrawl syndrome. Prozac's long half-life allows the body to readjust to life without the serotonin reuptake block more gradually. Hope this helps - Cam W.

I'm on my 5 th Day of Effexor nad I'm definately suffering from strange sleep patterns... Having realy disturbed sleep at night, but really tired during the day.
Had aterribkle headache on Saturday, but I put that down to the weather condistions (really low pressure, and that often gives me headaches.)

But have you (or anyone else know why) had problems focusing?? My eyes seems all out of joint today... not just un-focused, but constantly zooming in and out of focus... If I shake my head vigourously it clicks back in for a short time... Driving me mad at work!

Cheers

Nikki xx

I have had trouble with fuzzy vision.

I was also wondering has anyone on Effexor had trouble with lockjaw?? My jaw has been completely stiff for 3 days now (coinciding with my change to the XR version) and its to the point that I can barely eat (its only stiff on one side). Could this at all be from the Effexor and what can I do about it?

Thanks! LD

No lockjaw, but sore neck, sore claves, postnasal

I have more trouble with seeing small print.
My jaw was okay, but the back of my neck was very tight and sore for a couple of weeks when I moved from 37.5 mg to 75 mg per day.
I'm on 225 mg per day now and find that my calf muscles get very tight and sore at night. Also I think my post nasal drip has been worse ever since I started Effexor XR. Has anyone else with sinus problems related to allergies noticed this?

Hi Racer,
It's so nice to see you back! I'm on my second week of Effexor XR, and the only change I've noticed is my tremendous appetite on it. I had quit Celexa because of weight gain, but this is even worse so far. I haven't had any headaches or any other side effects whatsoever. I'm wishing you luck.
Cass
