ADD, DEPRESS., DEXIDRINE/ ADS-COMMENTS PLEASE!!

Posted by RG on February 1, 2000, at 18:56:47

I'LL TRY TO BE CONCISE AND BRIEF.

1. I'VE TRIED MANY AD'S IN THE PAST 2.2 YEARS: PROZAC, ZOLOFT, EFFEXOR, WELLBUTRIN, SERZONE-(HIVES)-ALL WITH PARTIAL RESPONSE-(NOTHING WITH WELLB. OR SERZONE)

2. FINALLY LOOKED INTO THE ADD THEORY SINCE I SCORE SO HIGH, INCLUDING CHILDHOOD MISBEHAVIORS AND CURRENT PROBLEMS.

DEXIDRINE MADE A DRASTIC DIFFERENCE. I WANTED TO DO THINGS, ETC. BIG MIRACLE. I TESTED THE REG. RELEASE (JUST 5-7 MGS IN TWO DOSES FOR 6 DAYS) AND HAD WONDERFUL RESULTS!!!! FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE. I AM NOW TRYING THE XR SPANSULES AT 10 MGS. IS THERE A DIFF. IN EFFECT. I THINK SO../

3. I LIKED THE NON XR BETTER. ARE THESE LOW DOSES? IS THE GREAT RESPONSE GONE AFTER A WEEK? I STILL HAVE SOME DEPRESSION, BUT THE DEX. MADE THINGS SOOOO MUCH MORE NORMAL AND I'D LIKE TO STAY OFF AD'S BUT...

4. WHAT ABOUT SLEEP? TRAZADONE AT 50 MGS. IS O.K., BUT SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF THAT MED TO TAKE.

5. DO YOU INCREASE DOSE MORE? I CAN'T SLEEP UNTIL 2 A.M. NOW, BUT THE QUALITY OF LIFE IS SO MUCH BETTER.

ANY THOUGHTS????

OH.. I'M 30 YRS. FEMALE

I am currently on 200 mg wellbutrin 2x day, 20 mg clexa 1x day, and ritalin sr 20mg day. (I just started the ritalin because I have felt that I have ADD too, and finally my psy doc let me.)

I also have depression for my whole life. Most likely caused by my inability to concentrate on school work or friends, although I have learned to compensate for my ADD by keeping lists and reminders and learning to reread sometimes more than twice to remember what I read.

I do not have the same reaction to the stims that you do. I have no problem with sleep. The ritalin does not activate me at all. In fact I feel more relaxed than I ever did in my life. And it seems to help my social anxiety a lot. Depression-wise though I feel the same. Still depressed most of time time, but not suicidal at this time.

Good Luck!

don't worry about being concise RG

Same stupid experience. Tried ADs and many combinations of ADs for 5 years...and the depression never went away.

Finally, I heard some acquantainces talking about me, or so I thought. They were saying things about me I had never told anyone, like 'she can't go grocery shopping or follow simple recipes...she is so highly strung...'

But they weren't talking about me, but about someone with ADHD. I went to the library the next day to read about it, and off to the psychiatrists the day after.

yes, RG, in my pre-Dexedrine days I couldn't barely get out of bed. Now I function fully, but, like you, with a lingering 'depression' - for want of a better word.

I, too, am still looking for an anti-depressant, I guess.

You should be okay RG. You're body is adjusting to the medication. Some people build a tolerance to the medication, but, I believe most people do not develop a tolerance.

It's like for the first time in your life your brain is clean, wide awake. What a miracle!

I've been on Dexedrine for about 9 months now. I started on 5 mg a day, and am now at 20 - 25 mg a day. I am hoping not to go higher. Most people don't need to go past 45 mg.

I don't take any past 12pm. My body clock is such that I always feel fine in the evening anyway. You should find a rhythm for yourself.

hi,
I take one 15mg long release pill at 7am.
I also take a 5mg short acting pill at 7am.
Sometimes I take another 5mg short acting pill anywhere from 11am to 2pm.

More often than not I don't take the second 5mg pill in the afternoon. I'm saving them...for what I'm not sure?

I remember reacting very dramatically to Dexedrine initially (I think I may have gotten a little high). Now everything is smoother. Janice

I am taking dexedrine in combo w/some other meds, although not for ADD. I definitely found a difference in the short-acting tablets vs. the spansules. The spansules did not work nearly as well as the tablets. (Found that I need to continually remind my doctor to write the RX for TABLETS, though--even though the 5 mgs don't come in capsules, if he doesn't put the word "tablets" on the RX, my pharmacy makes me take the RX back to him.)

The maximum I've taken was 45 mg. daily--15 mg. about 7am, another 15 mg. at noon, and 15 mg. at 3pm, NO LATER. I take 10 mg. of Temazepam to help me sleep.
Hope this helps--Kim
