Reboxetine's future in the USA

Posted by Anon on January 23, 2000, at 20:00:26

Just got word from inside Pharmacia and Upjohn - the FDA
will deliver their version of what the package insert should look like
by late February. If P&U sees what it likes, it will be available by
May. If not, it likely will never be available in the US. Too expensive
to do more studies to satisfy the FDA. The first package insert for
Reboxetine from the FDA contained some wording that would have crippled
sales dramatically. We'll see.

This board has several people either taking reboxetine, or who are very interested in taking the drug. Is the reason for all the buzz because it is the newest antidepressant, or does reboxetine have desirable qualities other antidepressants don't? what is reboxetine classified as.....SSRI, SNRI, something else?

this board has such wonderful information. thank-you.

Reboxetine is a NARI (Noradrenergic Reuptake Inhibitor). It prevents the reuptake of norepinephrine, and is very selective indoing so (it has no effect on serotonin, maybe a small positive effect on dopamine).

The norepinephrine system is related to energy, reward, drive , and motivation. My own experiences with Reboxetine seem to back this up. Side effects are the anti-cholinergic ones (constipation, dysuria, retrograde ejaculation) and insomnia. As always, YMMV.

I have been on rebox for more than three months, and for me, almost everything Bruce says holds true - the energy, drive, etc. Fortunatley for me, I am luckier than Bruce and some others when it comes to side effects. I never experienced any insomnia or constipation at all, and the dysuria and sex problems have diminished to very tolerable levels. At first, however, they were awful.
Good luck,
Luke

Luke, I'm curious how long it took before you noticed the effects on drive, motivation etc? I was on rebox. for about 10 weeks, and barely noticed any effect at all on the maximum doseage... It just wasn't worth the rigamarole I'd have had to deal with to stay on it any longer, but I'm wondering if full effects just take a long time to hit. Everyone else seems to have noticed beneficial effects but me! :(

I've been waiting for the intro of Reboxetine in the US for quite a while because of the number of positive responses that have been cited and needless to say, I'm very disappointed at the May (or possibly never) date suggested on this Bul Board. Has anyone had any success going outside US to acquire? If so, any guidance on such a strategy would be greatly appreciated.
