Yay! This site is working and so is my Celexa!

Posted by Shelley in Seattle on February 2, 1999, at 11:58:18

Glad to see we can share our ideas here once again :-) I like this site (and all of you who post here!) so much -- I feel the loss when it is not available!

And -- after a solid month, the Celexa has finally started working! I say this with trepidation, after reading pej's posts from last month ... but I feel like a truly different person. I wouldn't believe it if I weren't me!

Of course, even good things have their consequences. Aside from the mild-but-tolerable side effects, I have been feeling as though I have mental whiplash. I am grateful (and believe me, so are those around me!!) for the extremely favorable response I am having to this drug. But it is taking time for me to feel comfortable in my own skin again. It feels nice to feel 'even'. And I am getting used to not being such a misanthrope anymore. But it's going to take a bit of time before I am 'settled' into this new/old me.

My attitudes about a lot of things that were wrong with my life (and adding to the depression) have changed, too. I can only describe it as a good but weird feeling. I now feel very clear-headed, but not like a zombie. The difference is that now I can notice that I am dissatisfied or annoyed with a situation and change it or let it go, rather than ruminate over it the whole day.

I actually started feeling good about 10 days ago, but my incredulity that I could experience such a profound change so quickly coupled with the problems with this site delayed my sharing the good news with you.

I hope everyone has a great day!

with the Celexa! It's so nice to hear success
stories. I've just started taking it in hopes
that it won't have the sexual side effects that
prozac did. Do you have any news to report on
that particular side effect?

Hello Everyone,

I feel ALOT better, Thanks to those of you that
said to keep trying, Shelley, Lisa and others.
The jury is still out on the sexual side effects
but I think things are getting better.
No other bad side effects yet that I can notice
except I still slept a whole lot today. Tomorrow
is my first day at 20mgs, twice what I have been
on for the past 3 days. I'll keep everyone posted.
I hope this brings some hope for some of you. If
you can find the right AD for you, some of this
stuff really works :-)
Sincerely
dave

Hi!

Ruth -- I answered your question above in the other Celexa thread (I saw that one first :-) I'm just very happy to report that everything seems to be in working order again!

Dave -- Glad you are feeling better. It's really best to increase the dose slowly; this really seems to help reduce the side effects. Good luck!

Heather-- Celexa does seem to be sedating for some. Maybe try taking it before bed? (I had the opposite result - I take it first thing in the a.m.) What is your starting dose?

All the best to all of you!

Shelley

Shelley,

You said other AD's have reaked havok on your
sexual sensitivity--I'm curious, have you ever
taken prozac? Did it effect it negatively too?
(I found it did, which is why I'm trying Celexa.
I'm definately going to try and just take a
deep breath and be patient...

Ruth --

I tried Zoloft (my doc thought that would be less stimulating for me, as I had some anxiety and am a life-long insomniac). I was started off on far too high a dose, and my sexual response was totally shot within about a week & a half. I was totally anorgasmic on Zoloft -- at least with Celexa, even though it sometimes took forever, most times I was not completely anorgasmic. I am confident now that the side-effect has disappeared. I don't know how many people have a complete restoration of sensitivity on Celexa -- anyone else out there? :-)

It really did take about 6 weeks, but hopefully, if you can hang in there -- maybe you'll get the same response. I can't stress enough the importance of starting slow with the dosage to minimize the other side effects. It takes a bit longer to get a response this way, but you'll be less likely to abandon it early if the side effects are tolerable and mild. I wish more docs would understand this!

Good luck, Ruth!

Shelley

Sorry for the multiposts! It was so slow earlier!

Shelley,

Good show!

I've been using Celexa for a couple of months and life seems really wonderful again. It's nice to wake up ready for each day, and wanting to sing, and be nice to almost everyone I meet...big difference from prior to Celexa. The great part is I'm on a really low dose too -- only 10mg/day. Let's hear it for mental health! I think they should put it in the drinking water, like floride. ;-)

Dear folks,
Started taking celexa last week and began
experiencing intense anxiety. Didn't know what it
was at
first 'cause anxiety had not been part of my
depression.
Has anyone had the same symptom? Will it go away
if I keep taking celexa?
Thanks for the feedback.
Chuck

seem to work so they increased it to 20 mg
i am on my 6th day I feel a sedative effect
but my mind still races. i am worried this
drug won't work because it I tried paxil and
zoloft and they both didn't work. i have no
bad side effects yet i am wondering on average
when do you start to feel better. am I giving
it enough time. I am very discouraged.

Oh gosh, I don't know. Have you talked to your psychiatrist
about mania; I don't like the sound of racing thoughts.

Hi Crystal,

I can understand your frustration if you're not feeling much of an effect after 8 weeks. I'd give it a bit longer, then talk to your doctor about whether it might be worth trying another class of medication. (As you probably know, Zoloft, Celexa, and Paxil are all rather similar, and there are many other things out there.) People who don't respond to one type of medication will often respond to another, so you shouldn't at all feel like you're exhausting your options! I agree with Abby that you should discuss the racing thoughts with your doctor too, just to be on the safe side.
Best to you,
jd

Hi Chuck,

I started Celexa today.
My Dr gave it to me after Zoloft failed.
On 50m of Z I was outreageously anxious.
Full on paranoid really.
On my 1st tablet.
All night long no less.
Have u tried Zoloft ?

She tells me Celexa has far few side effects.
Pls let me know how this works out for you.

Best to you (and to all of us) ,

Neil
