PTSD and situationally dependent stability

Posted by chy on October 2, 1999, at 7:36:26

I was thinking I was a lot better the last few months, haven't flinched away from a loud noise; haven't fled a public place; doing much better...

So I volunteer to cover a shift in another store yesterday -- just 3 hours -- no big.

Okay, learned a lesson there, just need to think it through and figure out exactly what it was. (oh btw, hi, I'm new here) Obviously, I'm not so much dealing better as have brought my local haunts into my "safe" zone.

Anyone find this true for them?

> chy,
allow yourself the experience of developing a safety zone; this isnt pathological, just a human response to environment. as someone who also has ptsd, I have asked a lot of non-diagnosed freinds what thier experiences are like...I am big on narmalization:)I want to share with you that even people with no "diagnosis" create safety zones, have comfort levels and selectivley incorperate certain haunts (hehe, happy halloween:)) into thier safe arena of experience.
perhaps you will have an ever widening zone, perhaps not. I just want you to know that it is ok to have a small safety zone...be kind to your self....:)
much peace to you,
jennyann

It mostly just startled me to realize that I was developing safety zones. I've been having problems for almost as long as I didn't; going on 15 years; and never devoloped a safety zone that wasn't a friend's house or such.

To realize that a place as public as the local mall could become a non-threat was a bit of a revelation to be second guessed because I thought I was getting better in general and I was obviously wrong.

I've actually walked the seven blocks to the mall by myself a few times in the last few months without too much trouble though I usually come up with a reason to call hubby for a ride home.

When I worked the other store last week, I didn't have any anxiety until after my shift was over.

(I'm a nutritional counselor for a sport perfomance center, bytheway)

After my shift, I thought I'd wander around until my ride arrived and ended up hiding in the bathroom for 20 minutes waiting for the meds to take affect. And damn glad there was still a few pills in the bottom of my purse cause I hadn't even thought about them in months.

The first thing I did was thought I was going backwards and called my hubby's shrink in a panic. She's the one who suggested that I had moved the mall into my safety zone.

Haven't had a problem since, so I'm suspecting she's right. Of course I hadn't had the guts to test it by going to the other mall by myself. Next week. :)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

I've also heard it called Survivor Syndrome.

Symptomology includes but isn't limited too: clinical paranioa; anxiety attacks; social phobias; and flash backs.

Yep, that's about me in a nutshell. But throw in cripling insecurity masked by a bitchy persona and most people don't even notice.

chy,
your a warrior spirit, dont forget that! and as far as what you call a bitchy persona, let's reframe that.....I mean, we know that the quality which our culture identifes as bitchy is primarily a gender biased stereotype....aggressive and able to get her needs met, now THATs what I appreciate in women:)
hang in there..:)

Nice attempt at a reframe but there is a differnce between agressive and assertive. The former would fall into the bitchy category if it predominated. Whether that's the case for chy only she can say...
