Amino acids regimen

Posted by Morc on July 29, 1999, at 15:55:30

Has anyone tried the extensive use of aminoc acids, such as recommended by Dr. Patricia Slage, in The Way Up from Down? It seems like such an ideal way to go, if it works.

Actually, the woman's name is Priscilla Slagle. I've had a lot of success with this. I'm not sure why there's so little response to this here. I don't know if others have tried it and found little success, or not. Most "straight" psychiatrists have been lukewarm about it, but the theory (precursor loading) seems sound to me.

I started out using 5HTP, and had good response as far as my mood, but it invariably made me hypomanic. I switched to tryptophan (available by prescription only, unfortunately), and had good results. It's like using a very subtle antidepressant. I occasionally supplement with tyrosine or phenylalanine, but that doesn't seem to hit the spot as much with me. I got all of this from the Slagle book, which I can't recommend enough. And it's cheap!

My depression was mild to moderate, occasionally peaking into major. I have nothing against mainstream antidepressants, but the side-effects starting getting psychological-psychiatric, and that I couldn't take.

Right now, I'm trying intensive psychotherapy combined with amino acids as needed. It's been hairy at times, but worth it.

Thanks for your comments on this. Good to see someone trying alternatives to psychopharmaceuticals which can be as nasty with their effects as that which they are attempting to treat. In the SAMe thread below you may find it worthwhile to check out my posting on "Re: TMG as a SAMe substitute stimulant?? & 5HTP.." Some interesting stuff worth looking at their.

TMG is way cheaper than SAMe and may have some positive effects on top of your existing regimime. Jarrow has a mix called Methyl Donors which is way cheaper than SAMe ($40.64 Cdn. for 100 tabs -- more on the mix on my comments in "Re: DJ, your Qs? -- supplement(al)s for you, AB.. " in another thread below...

BTW, I have the Slagle book but I don't think those amiino acids are available in Canda, unless there's been a change in the past year -- how are they cost wise? I'm also checking out acupuncture and Chinese meds. at a nearby school for the same and trust they will be beneficial as well....
