lamictal

Posted by maryr on May 14, 1999, at 13:10:13

hi all! nice to find this message board. does anyone take lamictal for mood stabilizing or mania? right now i'm on it + paxil for bipolar. my doc believes i'll be able to get what i need from the lamictal alone. i'm SLOWLY going off paxil (w/his monitoring) and am glad about that but a little anxious that it's not going to work. then i'll have to ramp up the paxil again and not only that, i don't want to crash like i did the last time i tried to get off paxil. i've been reading more on lamictal but since it's originally been used as an anti-convulsive i'm not finding too much info on it.
thanks for any comments!

I don't take lamictal, but my doctor was thinking about prescribing it for my chronic pain (fibromyalgia), and I found a lot of info regarding use of it for mood stabilizing on Dr. Bob's Psychopharmacology board. Some posters said it was more effective for certain people than any other medication. The chemical name is Lamogtrigine (?), and the posts usually called it that rather than the brand name. Good luck!

I know the manufacturer of Lamictal was trying to get it approved for straight depression. I'm not sure what the outcome was. They must have had alot of anecdotal evidence that it worked for unipolar depression or they wouldn't have attempted to get FDA approval for that. Anyway, it sounds like a good drug of choice for Bipolar while
simultaneously lifting mood.

Good luck

Lamotrigene is the only mood stabilizer other than nimodipine that I am willing to touch at this point. I've tried about every med cocktail in existence (just being modest) for bipolar.

Good luck,

Chris A.

>Just for information in response to Tom, lamictal is now being prescribed for unipolar depressions. My psychopharmacologist said that there are now beginning to be studies establishing that. I've been on it for a couple of years, and it was the first med I responded to after a whole lot of non responses and responses to other ADs that were short lived. It has been around for longer for bipolar illness.

Hello. I have been on Lamictal for two weeks along with my Wellbutrin. I am really starting to see a big improvement with my roller coaster mood changes. Also I haven't gained a pound.

RR; do you have bipolar symptoms? When I tried Wellbutrin, I had kind of a hypomanic episode and then lost effect.
I am interested in anyone's experience with Lamictal as a treatment for unipolar depression. Anyone know of research or any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Peter

I have been on lamictal for a unipolar depression for about a year and a half. My psychopharmacologist said that while it has been used for bi-polar disorder for some time there is now research suggesting its efficacy for unipolar depression. My experience with it has been positive. After trials of many standard anti-depressants it was the first med that impacted what had been a treatment resistant depression.

Hi Ruth, thanks for the info. Are you taking anything else with the Lamictal? What is your dosage? How long did it take to get results? I have been going through the medication mill for so long and would love to find something that actually works. Thanks! Peter
