Amitriptyline

Posted by Pat on March 13, 1999, at 10:52:26

Someone on this board once suggested amitriptyline to me after reading about all my problems with all SSRI's, Serzone, Deseryl, etc. Coincidentally, my doctor suggested we take a break from SSRI's and use amitriptyline (since I had tolerated triavil well for five years or so and amitriptyline is one of its components). He prescribed 50 mg of amitriptyline at bedtime to start. I had been on that much amitriptyline with the triavil when I stopped five months ago. The first night I took the 50 mg, I was awakened out of a sound, ativan induced sleep to a very uncomfortable anxiety attack. I felt on edge all the next day, and reduced the dose to 25 mg last night. I slept well, but still feel anxiety today. Does anybody have any experience with this drug causing anxiety attacks?

>>Oh yeah...no anxiety attacks and most definately no horny attacks! :(
And ah yes, the constipation-I kept one laxative
manufacturer very rich. It was the laxative way or no way. But man could I sleep.

I have been taking Amitriptyline for several years. I take it because I am very nervous and cannot sleep at night without it. I take 75mg every night. It helps me to sleep and control my anxeity (panic attacks) the next day. I don't think I could manage without it. Amitriptyline is safe to take. It is a good thing to have around.
I know where you are coming from and believe me, your body will get used to the meds soon.

Pat-

I do recall having an anxiety attack (panic) shortly
alfter starting amitriptyline. Then again I was
having lots of them at the time. When the med finally
started working, however, it definitely reduced my
need for xanax (although lithium was still nec.)

I recall reading somewhere that in the first week
of TCA therapy, people can have an anxiety reaction.
My advice would be to stick with the amitriptyline
for at least a month, using benzos when necessary,
but give it a good try at a minimum of 75mg before
calling it a complete failure. I also never had
the classic "poop-out" of the SSRI's while on
ami.

I currently can't take it because I have heart
problems. To be honest, I am still searching for a
replacement ad. My subjective feeling of "self" on
amitriptyline seemed more like my "self" compared
to other meds. Since I also have bad allergies, the
cholinergic side effects were in some ways good!

Good luck,

Sean.

Thanks for responding everybody! The anxiety is tapering off - I am just taking 25 mg a day for this week, supplemented with 1 mg ativan at night. I plan to increase to 50 mg later on in the week. I'm hoping to decrease ativan as the amitriptyline starts to work.
