Interview tomorrow morning!!!

Posted by TexasChic on January 12, 2009, at 23:17:01

Its a full time job, in a category that isn't my forte - but still doable for me. I couldn't find a whole lot about the company online, I believe its a small one. I guess I'll find out more tomorrow. Wish me luck!

... I got the impression I wasn't quite what they were looking for. They were really nice, and it was a cute little place I would really like to work at, but just the way they asked some of the same sort of questions over and over gave me the impression I wasn't quite giving them the answers they were looking for. But that's okay, now that I'm drawing unemployment I'm not quite as desperate and anxious. I'll keep looking!

T is it possible they kept asking same questions to test you for sticking with what you say which to me would be positive if you stuck with the same answer???? Love and good luck Phillipa

I'll try to explain it. I asked them at the end of the interview if there was anything they thought I was lacking to do the job, and they said while my design skills were exceptional, they were looking for someone with more production experience, which is funny because I have way more production experience than design. Of course I tried to explain this, but they seemed to already have their minds made up.

The questions they asked over and over were about how I would handle certain situations when multiple jobs were going on and I was interrupted to handle something else. I told them I made lots of lists and charts to keep track of all jobs I was working on, so that I could look at them and see where I was supposed to be in my work at any given time. While in the past this same explanation has brought positive replies from the interviewers, these people seemed to think it said I was rigid and wouldn't deal with interruptions well. I did the best I could explaining, but sometimes people just decide something and stick with it.

Another problem I had was my mind kept going blank when I was trying to answer questions. This is always a problem for me, and usually gets worse during stressful situations, but this time I felt I didn't handle it as well as I usually do. I've read this is an ADD symptom, and when I was on meds for it, it seemed to get better. My brother has the same problem and so does my Mom. We all have multiple ADD symptoms.

So anyway, these are some of the reasons I felt they probably aren't interested in me. They were very, very nice though, and did seem to think I had many good attributes. Sometimes interviews just don't go your way. I'm not going to dwell over it, it just happens sometimes.

Thanks for the support everyone. I'll keep trying.

Hi TC - am just getting on computer now, but you've been in my mind ever since I knew yesterday was interview day.

You're sounding good though. I'm glad you have UI coming in.

You sound nice & positive & that's good to hear.

In the mean time you're getting paid WELL, right? and with the UI it sounds like it'll ease things for you.

How long do you get UI for?

Hope you're feeling better physically

luv & hugs, Kath

I'm feeling MUCH better now. I guess I really needed those antibiotics - Phillipa was right!

As for unemployment, I am getting paid surprisingly well. I get a bigger allotment since I'm working part time (minus what I make), and it should last for several months. Its cool because if I get scheduled fewer hours, I still end up with the same amount. I just have to make sure I apply to at least 5 jobs a week. That's not a problem though, I apply to way more than that.

~ ~ ~ Maybe it's one of those cases where various people are involved in making the decision & perhaps someone 'heard' what you explained regarding production experience, then said afterwards, "You know, she's really good at such & such & after all, she WAS telling us that...." etc.

> The questions they asked over and over were about how I would handle certain situations when multiple jobs were going on and I was interrupted to handle something else.

~ ~ TC - it sounds to me as though they were giving you specific examples; like for example:
1) if you were doing Project A & the displayer from Project B needed your immediate input about the layout....what would you do?

2) if you were in the middle of setting up such & such, and Isabelle needed you to do the ---- for ---- what would you do?
Was if like that?

> I told them I made lots of lists and charts to keep track of all jobs I was working on, so that I could look at them and see where I was supposed to be in my work at any given time. I did the best I could explaining, but sometimes people just decide something and stick with it.

~ ~ ~ Even when I read this post the other day TC, I got the impression that you were giving a general reply to very specific questions. I wonder if they wanted to know, specifically in the cases they cited, exactly how you might deal with that situation? I think this is pretty important to try & give thought to. They called you back, so they're obviously interested in you. If you can 'iron out' this part, it'd be good. Please feel free to be as specific as you want. I'd be glad to try to help you figure it out if you're interested.

> Another problem I had was my mind kept going blank when I was trying to answer questions. ~ ~ ~ I wonder if there's a positive way talking about this? I dunno - maybe even something like smiling at each person as you say 'you know, interviews are my challenge - give me good hard work, even heavy deadlines ANY day!!' then way more smiles.

> So anyway, these are some of the reasons I felt they probably aren't interested in me. They were very, very nice though, and did seem to think I had many good attributes.

~ ~ So you're right - they obviously DO think you have many good attributes. What did they say about the purpose of meeting?

luv, Kath

They left a message saying they'd like me to come back in next week to talk with them some more. I tried to call back but they were already gone for the day (which reminds me of another plus about them, they told me they believe in having a life and not working ungodly hours like I have in the past). So I will call tomorrow. Its funny though, because he actually said that while they thought my design skills were exceptional, they were really looking for someone with more production experience. I pretty much took that as, "we're going to go ahead and let you know you're not what we're looking for". But our rapport was really good, in spite of my mind blanks. They seemed understanding about it, like they knew it was nerve racking to be interviewed.

So we'll see what happens!

T shocking I was right about something???? Also thought they were interested I bet you get the job. Seriously you already apply for that many jobs each week? Unemployment must be way down where you live. Love Phillipa

Actually, I was probably more vague with my explanation here than my actual answers in the interview. But I will try to get my answers better ironed out in preparation of the next interview. I've found rehearsing various answers helps with the blanking out problem. Its the explaining off the top of my head that gives me problems.

No, not shocking at all! In fact, when you said if it was bacterial I would need antibiotics, I thought, "Well, she was a nurse so she should know", and then I decided to go to the doctor.

>Also thought they were interested I bet you get the job.

Thanks! I hope you're right!

Actually I think its way up! But I've done so much research that I know several different places to look online and I do so daily. Plus I live in a very large metropolitan area that has an exceptionally large amount of business headquarters. So its not really difficult to find more than 5 places to apply a week, especially when I look outside my normal career area.

I spoke with them

In reply to Re: For another interview?, posted by TexasChic on January 15, 2009, at 19:44:30

They want me to come in and look at various jobs and tell them how I would handle them. So I guess when they were asking me how I would handle this or that over and over again, it was just the way they interview (rather than a reflection on my answers). So I go in Tuesday. Yea!

This is a really small place, just about 6 employees in all, but they have been around for 16 years. Plus, they are really nice, and work for nonprofit agencies. They also have an interest in local artists and spoke of turning one room into a place for them to display their work. Its sounds right up my alley!

In the past when I've thought about going back to school, I've always considered either social work or becoming a teacher, so working for nonprofit agencies really speaks to me. And for a long time now I've been wanting to explore my creative side by taking up painting or sculpture or something. So this place really has some interest for me.

We'll see what happens!
