I had a very wise lady (happened to be a lady) told me some things years ago that I found to be true during an unusual, for me, Sat. shopping trip:
1) Less makeup and more clothes works better for most as we get older.
2) Just because you bronzed yourself silly at 20 doesn't mean you can rock it as a good look for you at, say, > 40.
I really really think she was right.

Well never wore anything but eye make-up but the sun damage is severe and will never go away. But at 40 I still looked good it wasn't til 50's that the sundamage really showed up. Yes 40's were good. Phillipa

I'll add 3. Big and long hair may have worked in your 20s, especially in Texas, but it needs to start inching up bit by bit as the years go by..
The exception is if it is worn up. A lady, shall we say past our prime abit, looks really silly waving a headful of hair around her neck. (although the style of letting one large hank hang over one side of the neck is still eye-catching to me.) :-)

Seems here the style of hair is long and straight no matter the age. Me I have a loose longish curly perm most flattering for my face and body shape. I like shorts and sleeveless tops as my attire is always casual. And I'm happy and unhappy about it but this loss of over 30 pounds has allowed me to wear conservative heavens never a mini skirt but shorter shorts mid thigh. I was in the Mall yesterday and was shocked at the way people dress to shop long dresses that are clingy and skimpy tops. I was talking to my husband about one in particular at the make-up counter she was beautiful and definitely had the means to have whatever she wanted. Long straight perfect cut light blond hair, a butt that must have been on of those implants. It's hard to be average is that here. I'd be more comfortable in loose t's and shorts. Are you in cities or rural areas? As I go over the line to SC and the atmosphere is quite different and the dress as well as more farms. Areas just being built up and Malls going up everywhere. So I'd be better off back in Little Washington. Phillipa ps why the baggy clothes? Oprah says no.

> and I`m 56:) lolWell, I've "got it" but in my line of work, it wouldn't be wise to "show" it. I'm 65. All you have to have when you work on the male side of a prison is a "part" and you're on their radar screen.
I am petite and have watched my weight and I usually wear slacks and conservative blouses. Doesn't make a whit of difference. I had to tell an offender that when he talks to me he cannot look below my chin. It IS that bad.......:-) He is about 20 years old.
I thought that I might be thought of as a "mother figure" but I guess they leave the "mother" out of it.
And if that is the worst that ever happens to me there, that is nothing. I have other things to do with my time and most of them know it..I think.

There seems to be also a big difference in what some do here - as in, not seeing a difference in updated versus going trendy.
My catty Grandmother used to remark:
"I guess somebody told her she looked good in that ______ (insert clothes, hair, eyeglass frames, dog collar, earrings, etc....) and she believed them."
I got being catty honest I do believe...
