Amy Winehouse. If she believes that you deserve it, she'll tell you to f**k right off.

> Does that mean they have to actually interact with my family? Because that would be a tough one. As far as who I'd most like to meet, my answer to this question has always been one person: Stephen King. There's so much I would love to discuss concerning stories and such, but mainly I just want the opportunity to tell him how much his stories have meant to me. Through the absolute worst depths of depression, I could always find escape through his books. There are many I've read so many times they are like a familiar comforting hand when I'm stressed or upset. I can pick up books like "The Talisman" or "The Stand" and just open to any page and start reading. Its weird how it feels as though you know an author personally after reading so many of their books. Sorry I'm blathering on, but I was actually thinking of him today.

Didn't SK go on an entire book signing tour on his motorcycle, and only to small independent bookstores? Yaaa...that rocks! :-)

We'd have to hide the sherry bottle, but yes, she'd certainly tell it like she sees it!
Someone else I know said she thought Angelica Houston would make a good addition to the fam because she carries herself so regally and can do "haughty" so well and keep her cool.

I would invite two:

For my brother it would have to be the supernanny. His kids are just totally, utterly out of control. It's painful really.

For the rest of my family, I would bring in Gordon Ramsay. Not only would he whip everyone into shape for the way they act, but he could cook us a really good meal.

Seldom.

Ooh, yes! Gordon Ramsay would definitely whip my fam into shape! "What the *&#&@%!) are you lot looking at??? Get your *@&!%#^$&## in gear and get a move on!!!" ROTFL!!

I would even wash the dishes for him :-)

I think I'd invite the Dalai Lama. I haven't actually read his books, but from what I've heard he has a great sense of humor coupled with tons of compassion.

I have this vision of him grasping my mother at once, and in how he treats her I could gain a bit of that perspective myself. Perhaps he'd even be able to show me a bit of who my brother is.

And if he happens to show me a mirror to myself in his eyes, I'm hoping it would be compassionate enough that I could take it in.

I was with visitors to my mother's house the other day who appeared to be having a bit of fun at her expense. I didn't care for it at all, perhaps because she didn't realize it. Perhaps not.

Somehow I imagine if the Dalai Lama came to be with my family, he'd fall asleep in our midst. With a smile on his face, of course. But I wouldn't learn anything from it, except that we are whom we are....

Maybe that would be the message he was sending?

I can't imagine anyone falling asleep in my mother's presence. Except in self protection, which surely he wouldn't need.

I would invite Gordon Ramsay. He would put my bickering family in their place and tell them in no uncertain terms how they needed to clean up their act. He certainly doesn't mince his words. I like that - even if it's harsh sometimes. Plus, we would probably get an awesome meal as an added bonus.

Hmm,

Oh "lead us not into temptation" ;-)

Okay, after much thought I'd have to say comedians Ross Noble or Billy Connolly. Wind 'em up and watch 'em go.

Now THAT would be an enjoyable family Christmas.

Thanks for the thread CS I've had a great deal of fun imagining different permutations and combinations =0)

Now, HERE'S a thought - I'd like to invite YOU to join my family, so you could get them all dancing. It wouldn't be a pretty sight, all us WASPs flinching and lurching about the living room, but boy it would loosen 'em all up.

Thanks!

That's what I was thinking! I have a sister in law who thinks she's "all that", you know? and I'm pretty sure Wanda could have her tongue-tied in minutes!

I'm glad I started this thread; it's very cathartic for me! And isn't it interesting how we're mostly choosing individuals known for their biting wit. (Apart from the Dalai Lama, he's just plain cool.)

Jane Goodall. No question about it -- Jane Goodall. I'd love it if she brought her son Grub, too, but Jane Goodall is my answer. She radiates such peace, and I'd like to bask in that serenity. And if everyone behaves, I could listen to her talk about the population at Gombe all night, and feel safer, and more secure.

Otherwise, harder to say. Maybe Fannie Flagg -- I love the humor in her books, and her characters all come from such nutty families, she'd be able to make a funny story out of mine.

Jasper Fforde? Funny books, at any rate...

Jon Stewart -- now there's someone who could keep me entertained enough to forget what's going on around me. He'd be on my list...

My husband suggested Don Rickles, because "his schtick is ripping into people." I'm not sure I'd like that, but you never know... His alternate is Arnold Schwarzenegger -- because "he's my mother-in-law's favorite dramatic actor..." Sadly, that might be true... Although my mother would only describe him that way in fun, she does like his movies -- and making fun of him, now that he's, you know, the Governator.

So, what time shall we expect Dr Goodall to arrive? (Frans de Waal would be a good back up -- less serenity, but at least I'd be interested in his conversation all night long...)

Oh, for purely recreational purposes, I wouldn't mind an evening with Chris Noth -- but I'm not sure I'd want my mother watching...

I love it! Dr Goodall is a great choice :-)

I've been talking lately about wanting to play some kind of anthropologist's role as far as my family is concerned - observing their interactive behaviours, but not engaging in them. Right, like that would happen! I'm afraid that I'll get sucked up into their monkey society antics as usual. But perhaps if I picture myself as wearing a pith helmet and hiking boots, I can maintain the objective role a bit longer. And I can take my camp notes at night, under the blanket, with a flashlight.

Ah, what a stroke of genius! ClearSkies as the Observer of the Crazy Family at Christmas. I think I might like this one.

I'll have to give Don Rickles a pass - sometimes he can be kind of mean. Jasper Fforde I could picture as hovering by the front door, ready to offer to make any last minute runs to the store (and so escape the company). Jon Stewart I could see cornered by one or the other of my sisters in law, looking panicked.

Thanks!

I can't think of any celebrity referees, so I choose Judge Judy. She'd get some order in the family court.

Well, I would go with Wanda Sykes and Chris Rock cause he would stir up my brother in law and father and I would love that and Wanda would get all of them going and then for my husband's family I would want Dr. Phil to get ahold of them. So how about all of them together for a crazy day!!! Now my son would go for 50 Cents or Kanye West for some Hip Hop and we could all do some cyber dancing *************Babblers***************** with the other three and have a really crazy time........I think I might laugh so hard that I will go ahead and put on the depends before......LOL
