That means something totally totally different across the pond in the UK!!!!!!!!!

Shag is slang for (ahem) sex basically.

So.

Anyway.

I'm glad the new haircut went well, I find these things very traumatic to be honest, and incidentally I got my haircut this morning as well. Its okay. I usually cut it myself!

A shag haircut is layered all over. You have to flat iron it to get the shaggy look. I'm getting lots of compliments on it!

I too find hair cutting traumatic. I take it you don't dye it too often either? The darker colours are actually carcinogenic aren't they? I think some of the American ones even contain lead ethanoate! Sacry now I look back at my teenage gothic phase and all the black hair dye I went through.........

Teehehehe.

Isn't bugger a swear word worthy of asteriks? Perhaps its not naughty in the US?

Anyway.

Yes, the darker hair dyes are pretty bad for you. I went to this guest lecture back in 1999 once in health geography, and they found that the biggest correlation was between breast cancer and being overweight and dying one's hair. I remember it clearly coz one of my mates at the time was a touch traumatised by it coz she was overweight and dyed her hair!!!

And I've read loads more about it since, although I have read that also consumption of dairy products poses a very big risk in terms of breast cancer. There's all these correlations between Asian woman living in rural China have like zero risk of breast cancer, but once they move to an industraized nation, their chances shoot through the roof.

Like anything, I think its probably really complicated.

I think that

being overweight
not exercising
dying one's hair using those darker colours
not eating enought fruit and veg
being exposed to unnatural chemicals in deodorants, shampoos, cleaning products etc etc pose risks with regard to breast cancer
(of course, having one of those 'cancer' genes as well and taking artifical hormones such as BC pills and HRT).
as well as the usual smoking and drinking too much

are the major contributors to breast cancer!

Anyway.

Did you know that 90% of caucasian europeans have the enzyme that you need to digest milk but (if I remember rightly) most other ethic groups don't have it??

Anyway I'm rambing on and on

Meri
oh PS, I get my hair highlighted. The dye doesn't actually touch your scalp and the colours are always pretty light, so erm....thats my excuse anyway! And I'm far from being overweight, so....
my natural colour is a sort of dark blonde/light brown. So its pretty dull unless I get the said highlights! I have bluey green eyes as well, so I really need those pretend sun kissed streaks...

Doesn't bugger mean the same thing as shag? Hey, that's a way to cuss without getting in trouble! European style! Bugger that bloody, randy... uhm, okay, that's all I know. Oh! Not a swear, but some slang I learned from Harry Potter - snogging (making out?).

But don't those things correlate with just about everything these days?

> Doesn't bugger mean the same thing as shag?

Ahem, well, erm. Bugger is ahem, sodommy basically. But BUT BUT its not really offensive, its evolved to be sort of a sentimental niceish swearword. Like, if you're an old grouch, you might say 'bugger off' to a person who you actually really like. Its hard to explain. But it is still sort of a swear word.

Randy isn't really a swear word, it just means horny. So. We find it quite amusing that its a first name in the US......

Snog is very much a word in common useage particulary amongst those age groups that tend to it with alot of people, ie teenagers and students. Also we say 'to get off with' as in 'make out' so, like 'I got off with him last night' meaning 'I made out with him'.

Phew.

Are they are American naughtly words we should know about??

> But don't those things correlate with just about everything these days?

No. There are certain specific factors that increase your chances of getting breast (or other) cancers.

Kind regards

Meri

If someone said "I got off with him last night" I'd think that meant they had sex. Here "get off" means to have an orgasm.

I had no idea bugger meant sodomy! That's so funny.

This is fun, we'll have to think of some more.

P.S. Do you eat 'blood pudding'? Because that sounds so gross!!! ;-)

I was just about to point out that buggery implies a certain amount of winkle picking. "Roger's Profanisaurus" is an endless source of amusement and inspiration.

Me mam used to buy black pudding from the butcher's and I used to eat it when I was little. I couldn't stomach it any more when I found out what it was. Peculiar taste though. I was shocked when a professor on some TV programme once objected to vampirism because he claimed there was no nutritional value in blood - I remember thinking it must contain iron, protein and obviously fat (you can see where it congeals into white lumps), probably other minerals and vitamins too that the pig had absorbed. Now have any of you tried peas pudding? There's a true northern delicacy for you.

By peas do you mean green peas? I don't like green peas - my Mom said I wouldn't even eat them as a baby. Yall seem to do a lot of puddings over there. Pudding for me is either chocolate, vanilla, butterscotch, rice or tapioca - in other words, sweet stuff.

Another thing I heard of (in Harry Potter) is kidney pie. Does that really have a kidney in it? Eeew!

Me and a friend met some guys from a different state one time that said they thought the way we eat everything in tortillas was gross (especially breakfast burritos - eggs and other breakfast foods wrapped in a flour tortilla, usually with salsa, yum!). We were like, are you out of you damn minds???

Yeah, like mushy peas that you put on your fish 'n' chips, but cooled and congealed so you can spread it on ham sandwiches. I don't like it myself but my dad eats it nearly every day.

Steak 'n' kidney pie is very popular here. I used to love the taste of kidney when I was younger - I'd sometimes have a pair of fried kidneys with liver and onions. Now have you tried sheep's brains, oxtails and tongue? You must like a big curly cow's tongue? Yum, yum.... They was a bit of an outcry in the paper today about a top chef serving horse meat bought from France, but I can't figure out why eating a horse is any worse than eating a cow?

I love tortillas BTW.

I'm actually very picky when it comes to meat. If I think about it too much it will make me sick. My brother used to tease me by biting into a piece of chicken and saying, "I'm eating MUSCLE!!!" He knew it grossed me out. So anything that has the name of an internal organ is just too much for me. I don't eat any seafood either, partly because of the taste and partly because you can usually tell what it used to be.

As for spreading mashed up congealed peas on a sandwich???? I've never heard of such a thing! But I would still choose it over a kidney any day! Blech! The only vegetable that really truly makes me sick, as in, I wouldn't be able to eat it if I was starving, is horseradish. I don't know why but the smallest amount makes me feel like I'm gonna puke!

I'm getting cockily around animal products my self these days (but I'm not a vegetarian yet). I had to force myself to eat scrambled eggs the other day because I found a dead baby inside and I couldn't fish it out properly. It put me off somehow, maybe reminded me a bit of the pickled baby we used to keep in the cupboard of our biology class with its shrivelled little umbilical cord. I'm fine with sausages and burgers though.

Do you have carling Sunday in the US? I think it's some time around now (maybe it's already gone?) where people eat black peas with salt and vinegar? Anyone else know what I'm talking about? I know what you mean about the veg thing, I'm okay with horseradish - it's turnip that makes me retch. I think it stems from one time emptying my grandma's bedpan after she'd had turnip diahrrea and the association lingered with me?

Turnip diarrea?

I had to make that the new title! Heh, heh! As for the baby bird thing, that would definitely put me off eggs! In fact, I'm pretty grossed out right now!

The only holiday I know of that we eat black eyed peas is New Years day. Its supposed to bring you good luck. That's pretty strictly a Southern thing though. Last Friday was Cinco de Mayo which is some Mexican holiday on which people drink alot. I don't know what it really stands for though.

.....and I ran into it again when I worked in a nursing home. We had to toilet an old guy who had Parkinson's Disease after each meal because he couldn't sit still on the pot - and yeah, out came the dreaded turnip diarrea. Fortunately I have a strong stomach. And since this is a thread for all things gross, why is it that the smell of other people's poo is so much harder to bear than your own? Hmmmm..... now there's a question to ponder over your breakfast cornflakes.

Cinco de Mayo sounds nice.
