deoderant

What the hell did mankind do before this wondrous invention.

Have you ever seen the layers of clothing that folks used to have to wear, year round. cotton then linen then wool and corsets and whalebones.

we have come so far. (((((cargopants))))

someone needs to test this out.

maybe one of those period reality shows they do on PBS/BBC. go back into time and see how well humans function with all that clothing... and how delicious the human body smells.

perhaps the next babble research project is already underway.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I don't wear deodorant ever. Not for at least 4 years. And the shocking relevation is, YOU DON'T NEED IT! Well at least I don't anyway. As long as you change your clothes every couple of days (or just the undergarments) and have a shower every couple of days, you don't smell! Or even begin to smell. Deneb doesn't wear it either, and neither do most of her family, if I remember rightly. I think its one of those things that your body gets used to, so you need to keep putting it on etc.

Anyway those folks way back used to wonder around with posies of flowers and stuff like that to stop the smells getting to them.

Meri-Tuuli, I hope I did not offend you in my previous post. I was not laughing at you, but simply at what seems unusual by my standards. You see, I live in a warm climate (South Africa) where showering on a daily basis is absolutely necessary, so your post seemed at first strange to me. But I suppose that in the freezing cold of Finland, things are different.

I enjoy reading your posts and find you to be a valuable contributor to Psycho-Babble. Please accept my apologies if I offended you in any way.

but, i smell like 'little kid recess' all the time (you know that smell, don't you? not like butt, rather cute instead, like little kids that have been playign outside at recess).

i've seen the commercials for that secret prescreption strength (none needed though) and everytime it comes on i jump up, point, wave my hands, scream at mr kk, you know, basically get his attention. he swears, it's in his vault.

but, then again, i tend to sweat when doing as little as typing this post. phew, i need to go reapply right now dear.

seriously, i can't wear certain fabrics due to my sweating (yucky, i know, but it can come in handy at certain times, those times i've yet to discover).

i simply can't believe you when you say one can go without. sorry, i'd apply it to my whole body if i could :) (i know i could, but it leaves an icky feeling, especially on the tongue. however, it does keep me from talking too much.)

Klavot, I've asked you before to be civil, so now I'm going to have to block you for 1 week. Dr Bob may choose to review this decision.

I believe the action of many deoderants is to block the sweating pores in the pits.

I think I need that some days more than others.

Hey!

No worries Klavot!

Well, yes. Perhaps in Finland it isn't quite so nessessary to wear deodorant or shower that frequently because it is clearly very cold all the time.

But still.

I does get like +28C in the summer around here, and I don't bother to apply deodorant then either.

And, who cares anyway? We seem to be scared of any bodily smells it seems. Or people think the world will end if they don't wear deodorant - try it for a few weeks.

I don't shave my pits either. I bet that freaks you out too!!! Although I have to say I do if its summer and I'm wearing a sleeveless top. But that is pretty rare due to obvious climatic factors in these parts.

Meh

I thought that was only antiperspirants? I can't use those because I get swellings.

Maybe it is a climate sort of thing. Down here, sweat smells in places that no one ever thought of deodorizing. Not only do we sweat more in the heat, but I'm guessing smell causing microorganisms thrive in the semitropical environment as well.

Daily baths are a must. Clothes have to go through the washer a few times in the summer. And I can't even imagine what would happen if people let their natural bodily odors run free. I suspect plants would wilt and dogs would run away from home.

And I go sleeveless at least nine months a year.

Isn't it great how kids don't stink when they're very young? I wonder what the purpose is of putting smells in sweat at adolescence.

And how about the atropine odor of fear sweat? What's the purpose of that? It would seem that it would be a distinct evolutionary disadvantage since the sabertooth tiger could easily find you from your odor. Or maybe it's like skunks. The sabertooth tiger would sniff and go after more appealing fare.

Is that with humans, Dinah?

Can you smell it?

Dogs can smell cancer and one day we will just breathe into a tube and a mass-spectrometer thingie will work out what's wrong with us.

My nutritional doctor insisted on smelling my breath, which I found difficult.

Yeah. I had always thought it was perfectly normal to be able to pick out which dirty clothes I was wearing during a panic attack. Or to have to wash the clothing right away because the smell was overwhelming. But everyone thought I was nuts. So I looked it up.

Which doesn't mean that I'm remembering it correctly. I filed it away a long time ago, and my filing system isn't so great. :)

Yes. I was wrong.

Yeah, in researching the correct name for what I was describing, I ran across a study where they swabbed sweat from under the arms of men who'd seen a frightening movie, and a control group, and women apparently sniffed them as they did a test? I'm doing this from memory, so details might be wrong. The women who sniffed the fear sweat did better on the test than the women who didn't. I think there was another test where women were able to correctly identify fear sweat from men a high percentage of the time.

I'm not sure why the gender roles were important. Women identify scent better? Men emit more odor?

And I don't know why it would be hard to smell either. Apocrine glands are found in the underarms, face, scalp, ears, eyelids, genital area, and navel. I'm not sure about the face scalp and eyelids, but the rest stink to high heaven in a very characteristic way when I've had a panic attack.

Maybe *I* have an abnormally stinky fear response. :)

But I'd challenge *anyone* man or woman, sensitive or not to smell, to not be able to pick out the clothing I've worn during a panic attack.

The scent is caused by bacteria breaking down the fatty secretions of the apocrine glands, so it's not an immediate smell. At least not to human noses.

I think they talk about the evolutionary benefits being something like if one ant senses danger, they emit an odor that sends the other ants running. I'm still not sure how that would benefit us, since human noses aren't all that good at sniffing pheromones. And even if they do subliminally, I'm not sure we move faster than our predators.

To clarify, the apocrine glands are responsible for all stinky sweat. And they develop around puberty, which is why little kids don't need a bath after P.E. The eccrine sweat glands, which help us regulate our body temperature, don't produce such yummy secretions for the bacteria.

So apocrine glands probably signal all sorts of emotional states? Arousal, etc? And if I'm understanding correctly they're responsible for pheromones.

Not that I understand any of this, mind you.

Smells and smelling » Dinah

I remember a long time ago that National Geographic magazine had a scratch-n-sniff survey. When the results were compiled it reflected a more sensitive sense of smell in women than in men.

My sniffer becomes very sensitive when I have a migraine approaching - part of my aura, I suppose. And when I was a child I would have phantoms smells before becoming ill.

More recently, I discovered that my sense of smell improved when I discontinued taking Lamictal. I hadn't even realized that it had been suppressed. All of which fascinated my allergist when he first examined me. Not that he could give me any answers, though.

With the assistance of GG and Zenhussy, I've been able to explore aromatherapy. Good smells have always made me feel better. I just know that if I'd been alive during the time of the Great Plague, I'd have been one of those survivors wearing a great beak stuffed with flowers and herbs, strapped onto my face.

I also am unable to wear something I had on during a panic attack without laundering it first.

I don't like this new trend of men shaving their armpits and other parts either (I know you're not a man, just saying!). I have thick back hair, nose hair (thankfully no ear hair), and a soft, downy coat all over my body. The only hair I shave is on my face (and also my monobrow, which gets a military-style slash down the middle with a razor). I'm thinking of growing a beard but fear it would look stupid. I do use a lot of antiperspirant though - Mitchum 48 hour stuff because I sweat so much on the soles of my feet. I'm looking into one of those mineral sticks though.
