Peach and Violet Skies

Posted by Quintal on March 1, 2007, at 15:28:33

I've just been out driving around the moors around here at sunset. It's bleak, as you can see. I find myself wondering the raison d'etre of the people who live in places like those small whitewashed farmhouses you can see down to the right in the first picture? Surely it must get lonely and depressing? What sustains them?

Yes - I see what you mean!

So is this near where you live?

It's pretty dramatic!!

You just couldn't resist lowering the tone of the thread could you? But I was thinking something along those lines earlier myself actually. I'm sure it's being done somewhere around here. It's a good place to hide if you're wanted for rape/murder/drug trafficking and the like. Always has been a popular place to hide villains and bootleg alcohol and such. I suppose they even made moonshine and the like in country parts when it was prohibited all those years ago. Oh well, question answered.

I don't think it would get lonely. People who live those areas are probably out working the land and getting fresh air all day long, so there probably isn't much time to feel lonely and, by the end of the day, they are probably pleasantly wiped out and just go in and enjoy a good book or some music . . . I think we have become a society of adrenalin junkies where we need constant stimulation and interaction. We have lost the ability to enjoy our own company and the simple things in life.

No trees?

Is that ice on the road?

Really nice pics. I like them both but I like the first one because the moon seems to add character. I wish I was there. It's snowing where I am.

I got lost in some kind of forest - where I don't know exactly - it was dark. But they're there somewhere.

>Is that ice on the road?

Yes, it's very cold and barren and windy up there. That's what I mean about it being depressing - you can't grow any veg in that soil either, it's too acidic and boggy for anything other than grass and heather to take.

I may stay inside a lot but have to know there are other people stores close by. Love Phillipa

I'm with Phillipa, too much isolation would drive me nuts. Just to know there's some neighbours down the road, maybe a little shop or two.
The photos are lovely though. Very atmospheric.

*********Jeez - if THAT's the case - what DO they do? Maybe they have sheep? & take care of them & then sell the wool?

Yes, that's probably what they do. Most are shepherds I think.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. The only store I'd need is the whisky store. Shepherds sound so cool. I know they'd be a disappointment, but you'd have heaps of books on all the tragedies to keep you going, and once or twice a week you could venture out to share a whisky with a lonely young shepherd.

Quite right.
We should be aiming for self sufficiency.
Don't want to be high maintenance or anything.
