Peach and Violet Skies

I've just been out driving around the moors around here at sunset. It's bleak, as you can see. I find myself wondering the raison d'etre of the people who live in places like those small whitewashed farmhouses you can see down to the right in the first picture? Surely it must get lonely and depressing? What sustains them?
