Oh Great!!!!!!

Posted by Phillipa on February 12, 2007, at 13:31:48

Geez I'm doing what I'm supposed to do I had an appointment with a PHD for theraphy today she cancelled let a message on the cell to call and reschedule she didn't call back. Why me? I've done all my research and I admitt I need help but the system isn't cooperating. I even had a pdoc refuse me as a new patient and I was very nice and polite. So now what I've seen three therapists already here and they didn't want to talk only said well drive to the store or something. Uggggggggg. Love Phillipa

Oh PJ, don't worry too much, I'm sure it doesn't mean anything. Therapists are busy people you know.... if its any help I have been given the names of 4 therapists to try, so far two have turned me down and the other will let me know at the end of Feb and the other hasn't got back to me yet......

So you're not alone in this matter. Try the PHD one again, and leave another message. Just keep ringing! Don't take it personally that they can't see you. I know its hard, (I burst into tears after one couldn't take me on). You'll get there eventually!!

At least you're not limited by the language! I have a very very small pool to chose from as I need them to speak English, and they mostly speak Finnish.

Kind regards

Meri

Give her time to call back.

& just as an aside, Pdocs and therapists may like you as a person, but may refer you elsewhere if they think it's not going to be a good fit - you have that same option - the relationship has got to work on both sides...

I dunno, & I mean in this sincerely but - you mentioned that you would only work with someone who would work on your past history with you. Maybe this therapist isn't comfortable working that way.

I think maybe too, since you are having trouble coping with the day to day (your previous posts) -it would be better to focus on therapy that would bring your everyday functioning up.

It's hard to do work on the past when present functioning is shaky.

Just my 2 cents.

That would be frustrating!!!!

This one's a PhD student? (Sorry I haven't read everything in the post above... limited time)I know as a student things come up unexpectedly. Give yourself a timeline, like if she doesn't call back in 2 days by this time, you'll call her back.

Hang in there. I know it's been tough on you this past little while, but just keep trying.

******If she doesn't call by the end of the day - which is now, really! - I'd say leave another message.******

**********I'd say ditto to the above. It's been my experience that therapists can work on the present & sometimes the past will end up getting talked about anyhow. For ex - something might remind you of something else & you might mention it & they ask about it, etc.

I am disillusioned about pdocs. I used to have a wonderful one. I could go once a week if I felt I needed it. She was lovely. She retired. I waited months to see one (the head of psychiatry,as it turns out, at a local hospital). He's the one who saw me in Oct for an 'intake', said come back in January, then when I did & my son was seriously psychotic & seemed quite in danger for his safety & the pdoc listened etc & said that I seemed to be doing well & come back & see him in a month or two!!!!

OKAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY! When I told my family doctor how upset I was by that, he was understanding, but said that in this area pdocs are SO overbooked that they just don't have the time to do weekly psychotherapy like Dr. V used to.
I have an appt with the pdoc Feb 26th & I'm sort of wondering what's the point???? I want to deal with some things that are from the past & keep rearing up in one form or another, preventing me from being able to function as healthily as I would if I dealth with them.

Oh Well.

Anyway Phillipa, 'the system' seems to be SO slow & frustrating. The important things to remember are:

- you're worth it
- try not to take it personally; there are probably reasons for particular therapists not working for particular patients
- you're worth it - oh yes - I know I said that, but you ARE!!!
- try to know that winter is really hard for a lot of people; you won't always feel like you do now.

I send numerous hugs, love, Kath

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time.
(((Phillipa)))
But like everyone else said, try to stick with it and remember its not you! I believe there's a T out there for you, and you will get the help you deserve. And you DO deserve it. You are a wonderful, warm hearted, giving person and I'm glad know you.

Thankfully she did call back appointment next Wednesday. So you all think that dealing with the present is more important than the past? I don't have much experience in theraphy other than reading the theraphy board and it seems like so many people have loving caring therapists is this the norm? Love Phillipa

I think dealing with the present is at least as important than dealing with the past. I suppose it depends on whether there are any old issues that you havnt got 'sorted' in your head. I dont go to therapy ( it's pretty much unheard of here) but if it were me, I'd prefer to deal with how I am now and in the recent past. Not because of avoiding bad stuff from the old days, but because I think I have dealt with those things, no point re- hashing them.
Maybe different therapists have different ways of going about helping.
Hope this works out fr you Phillipa.
Kinds regards,
Jo

Just my opinion but the babble therapy board is not typical of therapy relationships. I think this has been discussed before - I think Dinah maybe said it - but it's mainly self-selecting.

Don't look at the board as representative - it has caused some much anguish - read the archives -as to "why isn't my therapist like theirs"?

Yes, I rarely contribute on that board because my experience with therapy has been very different than most of the ones I read about there.

My therapist is for the most part a therapist who works with the present. Since I'm doing long term (very long term) therapy with him, we have the opportunity to explore present day problems in terms of my historical patterns, and to some extent how they came to be.

Lots of people find that they don't need to do that in order to improve. I'm one of those people who seems to need to understand the whys of what I do before I can change them. But not everyone needs that.

I can assure you that my relationship with my therapist was neither loving nor caring for quite some time. Any relationship we have now was built up with lots of work, and no, that's not necessarily representative of therapy at all. Or even of therapy with him.

Even therapists who do work with attachment issues and form a relationship with clients will often do more practical things at first.

Thank-you so much as I've really wondered so much about how could these therapists exist. Love Phillipa
