The pictures of the mountains may look pretty, but in reality, you look at it for like 2 seconds and then, it's like AHHH IT"S TOO COLD TO BE OUT HERE!
+8 here tomorrow, but then by Friday, it's suppose to go back down to -20 and snow... and who knows what the wind chill factor will be... winds of 70-100 km/h are normal. It' really not so pretty.l..

The snow we had the other day was really pretty though! I lived up north as a kid and I kind of miss the snow and the actual 4 seasons and all that.

So what time does the sun rise/set in everyones different parts of the world? Sorry to be ignorant, geography was never my thing - I dont know much about how it all works!
In England at the moment its sunrise approx6.50am, sunset approx 5.20pm.

I'm jealous of your daylight!!!!! For me its Sunrise 8:40. Sunset 16:52 and this feels quite light!! Seriously, when its 10am and still pitch black outside....its hard. Same when its 2.30pm and getting dark.....

Yep I'm off on a trip on Wednesday, actually I'll be seeing frozen lakes and snow -- in fact, I'll be walking on a frozen lake.....eeek. Its supposed to be -23C max and -30C min. That'll be the coldest I've ever been in my life. I'm thinking of not going to be honest!!!

Yes I'm petrified of falling through! But I'm going with a professor and some technical aides and they know the score. Plus I do go nordic skiing on lakes where my mother lives -- the ice is so think and its so cold, and the routes are opened up by the local council, and you can see loads of people on the ice already, so..... to be fair, I think I'm not going to go, I'm too chicken. I have never been in -24C temperatures in my life and I don't think I have the right clothes for it!!

I think you know more than you realize, as you understand that different places have different sunrise and sunset times.

At my locale, sunrise is 7:27, and sunset is 5:28. Within a timezone, the exact numbers can vary by up to one hour, but the duration of the day will be identical.
England is north of Toronto, so I think your numbers might be a bit off. London is at 51 degrees 32 minutes N latitude, whereas Toronto is 43 degrees 40 minutes N. Your day length is shorter than ours, just now. The official numbers for London are sunrise 7:33, sunset 4:56.
Our day is 10 hours, 1 minute. London's is 9 hours, 23 minutes (and 24 seconds, according to http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=136).

A decent rule of thumb is to pay attention to what the locals are doing.
About now, the ice road season is opening in northern Canada. Big rigs weighing up to 120,000 pounds have their only opportunity to get into many northern communities at this time of year. They drive right across the ice on both rivers and lakes. The driver has to maintain a very careful control over his speed, as the ice actually bends up in front of the truck, like a bow wave. If there hasn't been any thawing and freezing lately, then you should be okay. We have signs up all around here saying DO NOT WALK ON PONDS (or well what they call "lakes" but they're man made and SMALL), and that's because we've had a lot of freezing and thawing. Like today it got up to +10-+15, and tomorrow our high is suppose to be of -10.
But -24 really isn't that cold if there's no wind. Just dress in lots of layers, and no jeans, and that kind of stuff!!

Ughhh have your furance checked everyone...make sure all intake and out take deals do not have ice or snow in them. Here last night it was -7F when I went to bed...Windchills of....gak....-30 f ....so I was on my way to bed thought wow its cold in here now...looked at the temp and I had lost 10 degrees in 1 hr <insert screaming face> Long story short and almsot 200 dollars later ..at 5 am my furance was fixed...it was....the air instake deal outside for air..ice and snow...sigh....who knew..the furnace dude told me thats what 90% of his calls have been all weekend...Ahhhh but I slept from 7 am till 230 pm...all warm and toasty
PS this can only happen if you have a high efficiency furnace

That's not my idea of a frozen lake. It wasn't even properly frozen, the trees were too short, the mountains were absent and the ambience depressing.

Well, it's cold enough here that I have a quarter inch of ice on the inside of my window. Yes, that's right, the inside. It's soooo cold.

When I was about 6 yrs old and living in Minnesota, I went home with a friend one day and we walked across the lake. Half way across, my friend's foot went through & she couldn't get it out. I didn't know what to do! I had lived my first 5 yrs in TX, so this was all new to me. Plus I was 6. I remember trying to dig in the ice with my mittens and it doing absolutely nothing. I saw one of our class mates and yelled to her for help. She yelled back for me to get off the lake before I fell in too. I felt like a coward but ran to the side. My friend then saw her sister on the other side of the lake and started screaming for her. I remember so clearly her sister just booking it from wa-a-a-y across the lake (she seemed so old, she was probably 8 or 9). She first pulled her foot out, and then the boot before it could sink.
That's all I remember. It seems like she never really talked to me after that.
