Let's play a game called what Dr. Bob is like

Posted by Deneb on December 16, 2005, at 1:07:03

I think this will be very amusing. :-)

Disclaimer: I'm not assuming Dr. Bob to be any of the things I mention. This is a description of the Dr. Bob in my mind, a largely fictional character.

I imagine that Dr. Bob came from a loving family and had a great childhood. I imagine him as an only child. He must have been a smart kid and school was easy for him. Maybe his parents wanted him to go to medical school so he went. Maybe he didn't like the physical side of medicine so he decided to go into psychiatry, where he could interact with people more. He probably had a rich social life to compensate for being an only child. He probably joined all sorts of clubs while in school.

From his general links, I'm guessing that Dr. Bob is likes Scrabble, baseball, computer stuff, travel, bird watching and Spanish?

He is probably married with kids. His kids are old enough now that he can take the time to travel all over the world.

Dr. Bob probably felt like he wanted to make a difference in the world. That is probably why he joins so many groups and associations and started Psycho-Babble. Maybe Dr. Bob does this to fill some sort of emptiness inside? Maybe he wants to know that his life matters.

What do you think?

Deneb,

LOL--judging from the mental health professionals that I know (self included) most have at least a slightly messed up childhood!

Best,
EE

P.S. Or this is just MY issue
P.P.S. Or this is BOTH my issue and true!!

Hmmm...OK, then I'll add a kink in Dr. Bob's childhood. Dr. Bob probably experienced some bullying. Some kids might have bullied him because he is a little geeky and different. Maybe Dr. Bob even experienced discrimination from being an ethnic minority.

This is one of my usual rants, but here I go anyway.

I reckon absolutely everyone who is identifiably fron an ethnic minority experiences some discrimination at some point.

And I reckon it's a really difficult thing to talk about, because most people don't want to imagine themselves as oppressors (or oppressed). But I think it sometimes has to be talked about, because if it remains a hidden topic, how is anything going to change?

maybe he experienced people being uncivil to him ;-)

yeah.
i think...
the same goes with discrimination for females. i think... i always thought that i never was treated differently in virtue of being female. but... looking back now i most certainly was.

I'm from an ethnic minority and I don't experience discrimination much. But, then again I haven't had many experiences out in the world yet. I do remember kids used to make fun of my language a lot. I grew up in a pretty diverse city and school so it wasn't too bad. I almost never thought of myself as being different.

I have to admit that my Dad is sometimes a little intolerant of certain races and it is sad. Racism goes both ways.

I think we have to realize that we are all the same and we are all different. No one fits neatly into any group.

I'm ranting alongside you! :-)

Dr. Bob is like everyone else. He is not perfect and either is his life. But he has found ways to cope. Fondly, Phillipa
