Did you Trick or Treat as a child???

Posted by spriggy on October 2, 2005, at 19:11:17

My question for the day...

It seems my dh and I shock people (church people typically) when we admit to taking our kids' trick or treating.

We both went as kids' and we turned out alright (okay... well... that one is debateble! LOL).

I was against it at first. My dh demands that I let my children go trick a treating. I am glad that I did let my children go . I just dont dress them up in an evil costume. They have been an angel, a bummble bee, a dancer. This year, my five year old will be a teddy bear.

My dh usually takes the little one trick a treating for a little while and then we (me and my little one) go to church. At church, there are games, praise and worship, hot dogs, it is really fun.

Maybe you guys could do that as an alternative to holloween. You could have a bible character theme in which the little ones dress up like a bible character. You could have a costume contest. Just glorify God that night. That way the kids do not feel like they are missing out on what other children are doing holloween night. It is a much safer environment to have a "harvest fest" at church.

Just a thought : )

Yes, and I loved it! MMMMMM....so many candies! We even got apples...and homemade popcorn balls...and ATE THEM!!! And there were no poisons or razor blades!

There are LOTS of kids who come trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. I love seeing the cute costumes and passing out candy. It is so much fun! I'm really not a huge Halloween fan (kind of hate it), but the only part i like is when the kids come by. It reminds me of the extreme fun I had, and I love seeing them get so excited by the candy.

These days the parents usually come as a chaperone, and I know they throw away any unwrapped or "suspect" candy. I think that's wise, but I think it's still safe to go.

Last year a bus came to our street and dropped off inner city kids to do trick or treating, b/c they didn't feel safe going in their neighborhood. I would have been cool with this, EXCEPT...none of the kids had a costume, and none of the kids even said "trick or treat" or even "thank you!" They just took candy.

One kid asked, "Why can't I have another snickers?" so I gave him a few more. But it was kind of a weird vibe. At least if kids paint their face or put on a mask, it feels like they are trying to "earn" the candy! :)

I know that some families do big parties with candy "stations" where the kids can trick or treat in complete safety. Some church groups to it too. If you have 10-15 stations and give out a handful of candy at each one, the kids get the TOT experience and then nobody needs to worry about anything! There cna also be games, songs, chit-chat, etc.

It makes me sad that this tradition is sort of dying. :( Back in my day (the 80's) we'd have a little Halloween parade at school where we'd all wear our costumes. Most schools don't even do that now b/c it is too controversial. Now, I am both a highly PC woman and Christian woman, but I really don't see the harm in most halloween traditions. What could be wrong with first graders dressing up like kitties and princesses? I agree that I don't like anything gruesome or offensive. It's not needed b/c there are so many harmless options.

I love things that make kids happy. I'm dying to have kids of my own. In fact (true confession) I dress up my cat for Halloween. He does not enjoy it, but I do. I think he is ready for me to have some human children so he doesn't have to do such things.

Best,
EE

My mother was always paranoid about candy laced with arsenic or razor blades in apples. So we didn't do much trick or treating...just maybe the next door neighbors. But then our church started having a harvest festival with lots of game booths and raffles and stuff, and it was way more fun than just going door to door.

Still do..LOL (nm)

Yes - and it's a big deal where I live. It seems the entire county descends on Main Street (which is residential where I am) and we get about 400 kids on Halloween!

Trick/Treat then; give out candy now!!!! (nm)
