Don't forget the pets

Posted by Dinah on September 4, 2005, at 10:47:08

The human toll is awful, but many of those who safely evacuated left their pets at home with food and water, locked in garages, or in back yards. I've had to bite my tongue many times at people who evacuated in cars saying they had no choice but to leave their pets behind. The hotels are bending their rules to take them, and if they had a car, I just don't understand. My pets are part of my family.

The humane society is going in, but I am not sure what they're going to be able to do.

I've been giving money at Petsmart. It doesn't feel like enough to do, but I don't know what else I *can* do.

I'm with you 100% on that. It breaks my heart to think of all the suffering.

Do you know the condition at the zoo? What happened with all those animals?

The Zoo is fine. Only two animals died last I heard.

Whew.

But the pet population is really hurt. They said one thing you notice on the streets is the dead animals.

I am so glad that you mentioned the zoo. I heard that all of the animals were dead.

Today at church everyone stayed after service to brainstorm about how to help. I told the pastor that I thought that we needed to do something for the children to help get their minds off of things. We are going to the center and putting on a puppet show for the kids while the parents take care of other business.

That's a wonderful idea! Wish I was physically closer, I'd join you in a heartbeat! My church is collecting food and other things for a bunch of families from Biloxi who evacuated farther north in Miss.

It's just not enough, though. The need is so gigantic. I'm frustrated.

So you have all yours safe with you there? How are they doing? It must be tough in close quarters...? Unless you have them in a kennel or something? Are people there offering to *foster* dogs/cats in their homes for a while? Seems like that might be of some help.

I feel exactly as you do, Dinah. My cat is the closest living soul to me on this earth. I can't bear to think of leaving him alone under such circumstances.

Some folks, particularly the elderly with older pets that have been with them for years, seemed to have stayed in their homes, despite everything, because their animals were afraid of the water, or sick, etc. It may not make sense to some, but I probably would have done the same rather than leave the animal.

They are *all* with us very temporarily because of an unfortunate circumstance. Thank God the hotel was lenient, or else I'd be sleeping in the car. They're all safe, though. I'd never allow anything else. As soon as the boarding kennels reopen on Tuesday, we'll find a better place for them.
