I had something graded today

Posted by rainbowbrite on June 17, 2005, at 19:24:05

while I stood waiting...the feedback I was given was "you totally missed the point of the assignment" but then put an A on the paper.

Ok did I miss something? Is it a joke? I am so scared that it was a mistake and that it is going to be taken away from me. can they take it away if its on paper?

no one is over at students board and I was feeling lonely and just thought Id ask over here.
Please don't redirect me just yet Dr Bob. Thanks

That's weird feedback for an A paper.

Maybe you went deeper? :)

he may have felt that, although you missed the point of the assignment, the content and presentation of the paper you submitted was excellent, so he graded on that content and presentation.

I don't think he could take away your A. You have the paper with the "A" right on it. You have the evidence!!!!

I think it's unusual to give an A if the student hasn't really answered the question. However, I have very occasionally done it (I'm a teacher). If I read a paper that missed the point of the assignment but nevertheless clearly demonstrates that the student has achieved the aims and outcomes of the course as a whole, then I'd be prepared to give an A.

In other words, if the stduent hasn't answered the question I asked but has answered an equally interesting and relevant question and has done a good job of it, then I'd be prepared to give an A.

Where I come from that A wouldn't be taken away. You got it and you will keep it. But if you're concerned you could talk to your teacher/professor about it. In fact, I think you should talk to your teacher or professor anyway because it would probably be helpful for you to know where you went wrong when you missed the point of the assignment - you don't want to risk that happening again!

Congratulations on your A!

would having the student stand over to the side while you grade it make a difference in the grade you gave? maybe I had sad puppy dog eyes....I dont think i did but I just wonder if he thought omg this girl is an airhead....and gave it to me out of pitty

thats possible, I knew I screwed it up, but I had alot of obvious work put into it...i think

Tee hee! I usually grade according to the quality of argument, rather than the student’s appearance, but I can’t speak for your prof!

Seriously, though, I’m sure he doesn’t think you’re an airhead! I don’t know how it works in your institution, but I’m required to grade according to a set of guidelines and then my marking is moderated by an external examiner. If my grades were unfair they would be challenged pretty quickly. The system doesn’t make grading *completely* objective (I think that would be impossible anyway) but the possibility of having to defend my grading removes any temptation to give someone an A out of pity (or any other reason).

And presumably it was good work, not merely hard work. I’ve seen assignments which show evidence of hard work but don’t necessarily show that the student understands all the issues at stake. Hard work alone won’t get you an A. I’m sure your work was good.

Yeah, send him an email if you don’t want to speak to him in person. In my view it’s really important to know what the teacher wants to see in an assignment, and where you’ve succeeded in doing what was expected, so you can do it again next time! In this case it seems you didn’t do what was expected even though you did some good work. So you could ask what was expected, and then try to make sure you understand where you departed from the expectation.

I hope he gives you some good feedback!

thats probably debatable lol, when he said I missed the point i said...yeah I thought I had :-), and he looked up ....and I then said I just didnt know how to encorporate *this* into it.....he was silent and said no...what I mean is you were suposed to.......... I do need to follow up becaseu those dots are all I got LMAO

-- I really started to worry that he thought my paper was fluff and with me standing there sounding ditzy and (I had just got off the phone 5 min earlier...they had yelled at me) looking a little possibly distracted i thought it was most likely a pity grade. But Im sure they are required to grade under guidlines too :-)

But thank you thank you! I feel better, maybe it was good work....maybe...

ROFL! I hadn't realised what I'd implied! I just stick the word 'usually' into sentences to cover myself. But I've never graded a paper on the basis of student appearance, I swear!

Ah yes. The dreaded dots. I think that happens all the time. I know it used to happen to me in therapy, when my T would say something relevant and profound and then I couldn't remember it an hour later. I'm sure it's the same for students.

I'd be surprised if anyone got an A as a pity grade. I can almost imagine giving someone a C instead of a D out of pity, but most teachers only give out As where they're genuinely deserved.

> But thank you thank you! I feel better, maybe it was good work....maybe...

I'm certain of it!
