I think it's unusual to give an A if the student hasn't really answered the question. However, I have very occasionally done it (I'm a teacher). If I read a paper that missed the point of the assignment but nevertheless clearly demonstrates that the student has achieved the aims and outcomes of the course as a whole, then I'd be prepared to give an A.

In other words, if the stduent hasn't answered the question I asked but has answered an equally interesting and relevant question and has done a good job of it, then I'd be prepared to give an A.

Where I come from that A wouldn't be taken away. You got it and you will keep it. But if you're concerned you could talk to your teacher/professor about it. In fact, I think you should talk to your teacher or professor anyway because it would probably be helpful for you to know where you went wrong when you missed the point of the assignment - you don't want to risk that happening again!

Congratulations on your A!
