Anyone Creeped Out By New BK Ad?

Posted by 10derHeart on April 19, 2005, at 23:16:27

What the h*ll is with this completely freaky BK King thing?! (yup I said Burger King King)

I mean, I thought the first one when the King was in bed with a guy was bad enough.

But now, this one where he's looking in the window with that frozen face and all...what is UP with that? Can't even open my blinds now.

And why on earth are there animals folowing the King around?! Creepy to the max.

And now, talking to my lovely, zany SIL on the phone tonight, and he says I should look next time 'cause the BK King has strange, long fingers with rings....ewwww.

Anyone seen this?

I'm not sure whether it's the new ad or not, but if it's the one with the girls in little to no clothing, I think it's nasty....

Why almost naked girls (not even mature women)are needed to sell hamburgers is beyond me...

And I LOVE the way they even use "skinny, pretty girls" to sell things that WOMEN buy... How 'bout actually playing to the correct demographic and show me some good looking GUYS hawkin' the products???? Maybe then I'd be "subliminalled" (like my new term)into buying them...

Ah, then you are not easily creeped out by such things. My dear SIL loves it too. And he has a wonderful sense of humor :-) Alas, I'm even pretty much afraid of all sorts of clowns, too. Really. Stephen King is partly to blame, but it goes way back to childhood - and there was no scary incident with a clown, so who knows?

So, if I ever really need something from BK, I'm sending you as my runner, 'kay? In case *he* is actually there.

Exactly!! Me, too!

Good thing I don't care for BK anyway. If I did, this ad would make me less likely to go. And I'm not even kidding. Okay, fine, I'm a grown woman with major (and possibly ridiculous) issues!

I dont like the "king" either, he is creepy and looks like a murderer........plus, the new sandwiches they have, the huge breakfast hogie and the double whopper are nothing but artery clogging killers. I would never eat one....

For some reason I just re-read this, and it suddenly struck me what the phone call to the cops might be like...and I got myself ROTFL...

Police: 9-1-1, what is your emergency?

Ana: It's Him...the King! {crying, gasping } He's right by my window and he just keeps staring and standing there and...

Police: Ma'am, ma'am, try to calm down. Did you say a king is looking in your window? Could you repeat that, please?

Ana: Yes! Or at least..he was...I don't know..I shut the blinds...and there were a bunch of animals, too...please, send someone over here, now!

Police: Okay, ma'am, okay, is this a person outside, a man, like a peeping Tom?

Ana: No, of course not! That thing isn't human! I told you..the King..that
%$#$$&* Burger King thing...it's horrible! Why can't you understand me?

Police: Ma'am, calm down, I can't understand when you're hysterical...now, I'm trying to help you, but I'm not sure I do understand..is this about Elvis Presley, ma'am?

Ana: (totally frustrated) Elvis?!! No, what are you talking about?! I'd rather see Elvis..I wish I'd seen Elvis... Listen to me - The King from Burger King, you know, hamburgers, fries...he just stares and stares...I'll never be able to go outside if you don't send some help...

Police: Okay, ma'am. We'll send someone over. Now, I need to ask...have you been drinking or taking any medications?

Ana: What?! No! What on earth..I'm telling you, he's there, I didn't imagine it...don't you watch TV?!

Police: Alright, ma'am, I had to ask. Now, are you alone there?

Ana: Yes. No..I mean, except for him...

Police: By "him" you mean Elvis, correct?

Ana: Argggghhhh!!!

..and so on and so forth

(sorry, I couldn't help it...comedy is not my best thing..trying to cheer myself up...might be working...)

[No animated, creepy figures, animals or Elvis were harmed in the writing of this post.]

Yes, it's completely freaky and weirded me out! Yuck! My husband and I both thought it was scary. I guess it's BK's way of trying to be "cool" and "hip" and "weirdly with it" like alternative music videos and genx rave humor. I think SNL could do some funny skits about it, where the BK king gets shot or arrested or something for peeping in the window.

But at some level the ad worked. Here we all are, discussing BK, and now I'm craving a Whopper... (although I prefer fries from McDonalds)

true, we are talking about BK and true you are craving a BK burger right now...but would you really want to drive over there in the dark? knowing you might run into that, that 'thing'? you could just be driving up to the drive up window and out pops this kings head from inside! he hands you your bag attached to the metal claw he has for a hand. god only knows what he has done to your burger. nope, i think i'd stay home and have some cereal.

Ha, very good! Cereal for me, too!

But seriously, although JenStar makes an excellent point, one I often realize is true when I start ranting about some commercial or another, I think it still can backfire for some of these marketing campaigns.

I shouldn't eat any fast food. Wastes money, terrible nutritionally (as I always make poor choices or am too weak...) Nevertheless, I still go through drive-thrus probably 3x a week right now. NOT proud of that, but I'm being honest.

And for me, this ad campaign, when I already lean toward other FF places anyway, really does totally turn me off BK. Doesn't even come close to making me crave anything. There have been others, too. Like where a woman dressed very sexy is used to sell a burger. Or, a while back, (Carl's Jr.?) the *hook* was that stuff dripping and glopping all over your clothes, or down onto other people, meant the burger was really good.....uh, no...YUK! This might be pathological, but I actually felt queasy watching those ads.

So, sometimes, though their ads are memorable for evoking feelings of digust/shock/offense/creeped-out in me, they really do give a strong, negative association toward that chain - at least for the time the campaign runs.

Weeks later, as my memory can be incredibly porous and selective, I'll admit I can't remember which ads went with which places...so I guess it's a temporary loss of interest from this consumer.

Really interesting topic to me, though (duh!)

You know, sometimes I do the same thing you mentioned -- I get so 'turned off' by a certain commercial that I temporarily boycott the product in question, even though I know that I personally have little effect on the overall marketing scheme.

For example, when that hideous little girl was doing the Pepsi commercials, I decided to boycott pepsi personally (it lasted maybe a week, but at least it happened!)

I know what you mean. Sometimes the commercials feel so invasive, so icky, so WRONG -- and it makes me feel a bit better to not use the products for a while. It sort makes me feel like I have the power after all, even though they try to make their marketing so clever that it can fool even the most cautious consumer.

Are there any other commercials out there that make you want to 'boycott' anything right now?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

Good question. I'll bet there are, just can't think right now.

If I notice one during my TV watching this week, I'll post about it. Sheesh, as many hours as I have the thing on some days, you'd think I'd recall one....but I may be running out of the room then to get stuff done before shows come back on...ad-people don't like that, now, do they?

(No offense to anyone working in advertising or marketing...love ya'! you guys are deviously brilliant...(well most of the time) ... :-))
