Thanksgiving side dishes

Posted by partlycloudy on November 12, 2004, at 9:45:09

I want to know what people's favourite recipes are for Thanksgiving. I like to make a chestnut stuffing, and key lime pie for desert.

Hey PC!

The ever popular green bean casserole is one of mine as well as something called "New England Yam Bake" which gives the traditional yams a face lift....are you looking for specific recipes?

No, just ideas and what people really enjoy - I want to cook as much as I can ahead of time so I can enjoy my breakdown on Thanksgiving Day.

I love garlic mashed potatoes, my dad's cole-slaw, and the stuffing. I know it's all kind of basic...but so yummy. Oh, and don't forget the lovely homemade gravy from the turkey drippings. I love that 'real' gravy much, much better than the prepackaged kinds. It makes the whole dinner come alive for me.

My mom loves that canned cranberry sauce. She wiggles it out onto a bowl, right in its jellylike little oblong cylindrical shape, and cuts it into thick wedges (most of which she herself eats.)

We offered jokingly to look up recipes and make here a fancier, "gourmet-ish" cran. sauce a la Ms. Jailbird Steward or others. But my mom simply said no, she looooves that canned cranberry sauce, and wants no substitute. Maybe like my cravings for Big Macs (no steakhouse burger for me!) or the way kids prefer boxed Mac & Cheese to homemade mac/cheese....

So we always have that too!

this year i made (in time for canadian thanksgiving, of course):

* a new stuffing recipe, with apricots, figs, and dried cherries - yum!
* mom's classic wild rice casserole with mushrooms and slivered almonds
* sweet potatoes with nutmeg and cinnamon and sweetened with brown sugar
* steamed green beans with slivered almonds
* spinach salad

and of course there was the turkey with homemade gravy. the cranberry sauce was also homemade (with orange - yum!) before dinner there were veggies with hummus (homemade)

boy was it all good! i had my friends bring dessert. pumpkin pie and chocolate cake. we ate like kings.

i didn't even start cooking ahead of time - got up at 7 am and dinner was ready by 6. :) eleven hours of prep. good work by me!

This recipe is from, yes, Martha. I do eat cheese, but I don't eat eggs, so I substitute 1 cup of tofu for the 4 eggs. When invited to eat with meat eaters, I bring this for me to eat, and others have it as a side dish. That way the hostess doesn't have to figure out what the heck to feed that pain in the neck Emmy!

American Thanksgiving is on November 25 (it's always the last Thursday in November). And the next day is Recovery Day, when you eat all the leftovers and go Christmas shopping. They have it all figured out here.

Cool, thanks for that. Is there a Canadian one on a different date?

Yes, Canadian thanksgiving is celebrated the same day as Yankees celebrate Columbus Day. I can;t remember if the date changes every year, though. Haven't had one since 1983...
