Back from the hospital

Posted by sdjeff on November 9, 2004, at 15:05:11

Well, I got released from the hospital this morning. It was a fairly positive experience. I learned a good deal about my behavior and how to manage it. The only things I could complain about were the food and the smoke breaks were few and far between.

I also learned that my triglycerides are high. Now I have to exercize. ugh.

I don't feel suicidal anymore but I'm still as depressed as ever. I feel like I could have stayed longer but I guess I'm stable enough to be out. I just know I have a lot to go over with my therapist and pdoc.

Thanks to all for your support, and thanks to dr. Bob for running this site.

Glad to hear it was helpful for you.

The easiest way to reduce your triglycerides is to increase your intake of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids....fish oil. Guess what the side effect is? Mood stabilization/antidepressant effect. Bonus! Cheapo at Walmart.

I'm so glad it worked out for you. And thanks for letting us know.

Hospitals seem so scary, but at times it is best to be in a safe place where you can get the attention and help you need. Don't hesitate to do it again if you need it.

Welcome back

Other people have already said the things I would about well done for using the hospital for a while. And that you can talk to your pdoc meantime, and check with them if you are wondering if you need to go back at some point. Hopefully you wont, but having been released doesnt mean your 'turn' of that care is over.

Coming back from hospital is a difficult time; suddenly you're back in your 'real life' and without the support of other patients or the health profs. Even for someone well who has been on holiday, coming back home can be a bit of a downer.

There are some good things too- better food, sleeping in your own bed for a start. When you are feeling well enough to make daily decisions, having more control over what you do when is also good.

And you get released once you are over the worst, but that wouldnt usually be when you are absolutely well. Although you may know that intellectually, its still a bit disappointing to leave before you are 'cured'.

So dont be surprised if you do feel more vulnerable and dissatisfied for a while. Its entirely 'normal' in the circumstances.

Your choice, of course, but being nice to yourself, not expecting too much, and making lots of use of your health profs are all worth considering, if you havent already.

Sorry- I'm rambling on. What I really wanted to say was lots of luck now, and thinking of you making this transition.

I'm glad that it was helpful for you. Be good to yourself. When you get out of the hospital if you have Pnemonmia, you need to rest - the same applies to you.

My triglycerides are high, too. I eat LOTS of sugar (chocolate, ice cream, cookies), so that is probably a lot of my problem. But my doctor suggested that I reduce starches since they contribute to triglycerides, too. So I have shifted from a bagel for breakfast and ravioli for dinner to cheese and fresh veggies for breakfast and meat/cheese and veggies for dinner (salmon and asparagus last night - yum!). I am eating peanuts (taking them out of the shell reduces the quantity since it takes time and effort) instead of pretzels. I still eat the sweets when I crave them, but I've reduced the carbs that I was eating just because I needed to eat *something*. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks if this has actually worked.

Larry - I already take fish oil every day (1050 EPA, 150 DHA). If I increased the fish oil, would it help??

The triglyceride reduction appears to be correlated with DHA intake. Can I assume you're using a high-EPA product?
