Uplifting Songs

Posted by Angel Girl on October 2, 2004, at 5:06:42

I want to make a CD of songs that can help me when I'm feeling depressed, songs that will help me carry on and hopefully uplift my spirit. I'm not into rap but any other genre, artist or time era is welcome. Any suggestions?

Another Day - James Taylor (Hourglass)
Up From Your Life - James Taylor (Hourglass)
You've Got a Friend - Carole King (Tapestry)

I'm sure I'll think of more. Will get back to you.

Most anything by Jimmy Buffett, and one of my all time favorites..."Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.

I take comfort in the song, "We Shall Overcome."

In general, 60s folk songs help a lot when I need to be comforted and uplifted, especially Peter Paul and Mary's music.

Moondance by Van Morrison......Homegrown Tomatoes by Guy Clark.........Shining Star by Earth, Wind and Fire.....Clyde by J.J. Cale....Tempted by Joe Cocker....America by Keb Mo........Kind and Generous by Natalie Merchant. I did not pick these strictly for content....but for the way I feel when I hear them.....Good listening!!!!!!! pat

Anything by Johnny Clegg. Lyrics aside, the music is so irresistable and upbeat that it's a 100% guaranteed depression buster.

Bright Side of the Road - Van Morrison

Drive - Incubus

Funny, I was going to suggest the version of "What a Wonderful World" by Joey Ramone on his final solo album. Also, "We're Going to Be Friends" by The White Stripes off of their album "White Blood Cells". ;) Atticus

Hi: Good idea!
Um, ditto on the White Stripes!
Also, U2 from their "All That You Can't Leave Behind" Album:
"Beautiful Day"
"What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now
Was a beautiful day" (that's the last verse).

AND: "Stuck In A Moment"
"I'm not afraid
Of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me
That I haven't already heard

I'm just trying to find
A decent melody
A song that I can sing
In my own company"

I especially love the latter song, and will play it blastingly loud and sing along at the top of my voice!! It so encapsulates my GAD feelings and getting "stuck in a moment" and worrying all the time about something silly to the point of anxiety. It's a "shake me out of it, positive thinking song"!
Take a listen!

I'm sure there's loads more....oh yeah, for pure fun and sarcastic humour, if you like pop-punk, try The Offspring's "She's Got Issues" off "Americana".

I have what I call my "Singalong" mix CD, that I will play whilst driving, if I feel down, and I will sing loudly to that too! Somehow, singing can bring joy to the spirits. That particular CD is full of somewhat inane pop music, that I couldn't just sit and listen to, but always enjoy driving and singing to it. Go figure!
Warm wishes
Jas

Ha, generational differences at work! :) Nice to know that a classic song can be revisited, though.

Can't remember the proper details on these, sorry!

the theme tune to 'Working Girl'? Something like'let the river run' by Carly Simon

And the S African anthem from 'Cry Freedom'

Can go for something really corny like 'I will survive'.

Lark ascending, Vaughan Williams, is peaceful and beatiful classic music.

Thank you for this thread- its such a good idea! And I hope you get a range of things that help you when you are down. Its certainly also going to help some of the rest of us, too!

PS Some Queen songs are really energising (eg Dont Stop my Now'. You could have a shot at their greatest hits album (or maybe borrow it from someone just in case you hate them all!)

"In a Big Country" by Big Country.

I listen to a lot of different types of music, but whenever I hear that song I get so excited. I turn it up loud and wail at the top of my lungs! :)

I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature at this site:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

The first time anyone refers to a book, movie, or music without using this option, I post this to try to make sure he or she at least knows about it. It's just an option, though, and doesn't *have* to be used. If people *choose* not to use it, I'd be interested why not, but I'd like that redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration:

Thanks!

that song *is* the bomb! i think you and i have the same taste in music! another good 80's tune that i just downloaded is "eyes without a face" sung by billy idol..gosh there are so many, but i tend to get sick of them by playing them over and over. and the music they come out with nowadays just blows my mind, too..:-) i don't know what happened to queensryche..i am interested in finding out now, though..and looking into some more of their old tunes.

amy :)
